It doesn't look like a terrible idea to me. They fold flat, support a pretty good weight and would provide a wide ROS to help with foot comfort. The trick would be getting a them on a strap and having them stay there. Might have to cut a slot in the vertical support or add a keeper around it.

Why don't you try and build one and report back? I am thinking of building a few strap on steps. When I do I will report here.

There are a number of other folding steps on the market already not sure the hinge is the issue.

I tried to make one work. Even with a ratchet straps I couldn't make it stable enough for my liking due to the short lever length of the hinge. Also there was a pretty good rattle that would need to be dealt with.
