Dumb question but I like to check things. Maybe @Fl Canopy Stalker or @Brocky have seen this or anyone else.

I'm about to move a bunch of stuff into an outdoor, non-climate controlled shed that is vented. This is only temporary why I do some work and reorganizing inside. I have a bunch of stuff in totes and bought a bunch of silica desiccant packs from amazon.

Are there any concerns with dropping a few of those desiccant packs in all my gear totes? I don't want to like "overly dry out" my ropes or something.

Thanks!

If it’s an out door non climate controlled shed, I wouldn’t worry about over drying out the ropes or gear. Is your tote seal tight or standard type of totes? If they are the standard totes that silica will be fighting humidity in the air. If they are seal tight, I’d place a couple of the small packs in the totes and then leave some cedar or bamboo in the shed to help combat the moisture from temperature changes. Either way I doubt in a non temp controlled shed, that you’re gonna over dry out gear in a tote

Umm dessicant packs job is to take water out of the air, not put it in.

I know. I'm afraid that being too dry might be harmful. I know it was a low odds question, but I always ask when stakes might be high and my knowledge is low.

Thanks. Right now, they are in the el cheapo Wally world sweater totes (so not tight). I didn't know that cedar and bamboo take up moisture. I thought cedar was just to smell good!

Too many packs might dry stuff up, but would regain moisture once exposed to air. If the shed is rodent free, you could skip the packs and leave the totes partially open, not much humidity this time of year.

So, it's possible to dry ropes out too much? Like the desert might be bad for ropes and webbing?
