DIY Saddle vs Commercial

I'm new to saddle hunting and saddlehunter.com. Could someone sell me on either the sitdrag rock harness or commercial saddle (mantis or others). Some items to consider. I don't want to spend a ton unless it's worth it to get the commerical one. I also don't plan on any all day sits if that factors in at all.

Thanks!

I’m trying to decide on the same thing. Newbie as well and can’t decide if i should go through the trouble of DIY or just buy commercial. Have never owned a saddle before.

First off, Welcome guys!

As a suggestion you might check out the saddlehunter map and see if there's someone near you who'd be willing to let you sit in their saddle to see if you like it. There's a lot of great guys here willing to help and who love to talk saddle hunting. There's a lot of options out there right now and they are not all created equal. Unfortunately the feel of a saddle is a pretty personal experience so no one is going to be able to absolutely tell you what you'll like.

Also, as hunting seasons are closing out you'll see more and more local (i.e. state specific) saddle get togethers being arranged. These are great venues to meet other saddle hunters, try some gear and see some specifics on use and methods. I've been saddle hunting for several years now and still seem to learn something new every time I attend on of these.

I went from a sitdrag and rch to an H2 slingshot
The H2 was $175 shipped
The sitdrag was $35, RCH was $50, plus my time taken to add molle webbing and a waist belt to it.

IMO the H2 is much more comfortable and less fiddle factor as the H2 cups my bottom with the larger seat over the sit drag.

I've sat in the H2 all day once and a lot of 4 hour sits, the sit drag was just for a handful of 4 hour sits and was never uncomfortable but the commercial saddle definitely edges out over the sitdrag

Firstly I can't think why you wouldn't like saddle hunting it is by far comfier than a hang stand so the question is do you like doing DIY next question is will you make anything else after a saddle, the right sewing machine will cost more than a saddle, maybe if you get lucky not but if it is only for a saddle I would say buy one, if you plan to do other projects i would say DIY as it will open up a load of projects but that is me, some people are not practical and have trouble doing it, but it isn't really hard if you go slow just think about the cost of set up as likelyhood is it won't be cheaper in the beginning, regards wayne

I did almost exactly what Mettbriler has done but I started with a mantis and didn’t like it. Just would not stop ridding up or staying in place. Moved to a sit drag with a bridge that I sewed on with webbing. Killed two bucks with it last season and just bought an H2. I did several 7 hour hunts with the sit drag but wanted something professionally sewn. The H2 is awesome and reasonably priced. I got mine for $138 if you don’t want molle, linesman loops or leg straps he will discount it. Can’t be that price anywhere. I’d suggest for new saddle hunters to get the H2 for comfort and price. It is the best!
