Double Braid Splice

I was goofing around, seeing how hard it was to splice 11mm double braid. All in all, pretty straight forward but I really could not bury the core too far into the cover (where it is core on core). I was just using some old double braid lying around the house. The cover really does not "expand" much. Is this common, and do I need to taper the core more by plucking strands, or is it because it is cheap rope? I assume that is where the strength comes from, the binding of the cores in the cover. Pete
