I just stumbled across this one and would be handy in the field with a swiss army knife or equivalent. It's been in front of me my whole life and never knew.

The one I have does have the hole, so it was designed for that use. I only have the one myself, so I cannot speak to that always being the case.

I did a knife sheath with the one on mine once. PITA, but it worked. Made the sheath out of an old boot, and the knife handle out of a deer I killed. Blade from an old mora knife that broke. Dad still has it sitting on a shelf at his office.
