While getting set up yesterday I noticed the gate on the new CAMP Photon screw gate biner I just got almost impossible to open with my weight on it. I thought that was a little strange so I stood up and took my weight off of it and it opened right up! I opened the gate and put my weight into it and the gate wouldn't close, but when I slowly took my weight off the gate closed. It freaked me out pretty bad so I swapped it out pretty quick. It's rated for 21kn and I really don't think it should be flexing with only 200lbs weight on it!

Wow. That's scary

I'm going to contact them and ask about it. It's brand new and I've used it maybe three times now. We all know what happens when metal is flexed and bent over and over again

Thanks for the heads up!

Definitely contact the manufacturer. I've got on biner that does this. It was a cheapo from cabelas. You know, that two pack of black ones they sell. I haven't had any problems with it yet but I don't use it for anything important any more.

This happens to my Dmm and petzl biners. I am not sure it's a fault.

In what situation are you putting weight on a biner with the gate open?

This is why they note major axis strength with the gate closed .. having the gate closed increases the strength.

I think I discovered it when I was clipping the tag end of my tether back into the biner while I was sitting in the saddle.

When I read the thread title it reminded me of a couple 51kn steel carabiners I'd collected at work that had been blown wide open when inappropriately used in rigging set-ups.
