First sit in my 2 panel / tactisaddle hybrid

I've been hunting out of a kestrel since it first came out. Overall it wasn't bad, but I felt it was heavy and I had some hip pinch that was more annoying than anything. I ran a very low tether around the base of my neck and it worked well for half day sits. I had to run the belt well below my waist and it just never felt right. The low tether helped with comfort but limited how well I could maneuver.

I've liked the concept of the 2 panel saddles, and if laid out you can remove any webbing contact with your hip bone and you have a built in back rest. I still wasn't a huge fan of the general geometry and how the waist belt works with them though.

When I first saw the tactisaddle, I grabbed some webbing I had just to see how it would feel and was pleasantly surprised. I'm mostly a leaner, but still thought it would be better if it had just a little bit of an actual seat.

I just had my first sit on my diy. It is built much like the tactisaddle, but has a full bottom panel. Sat for 5 hours last night and it was the most comfortable saddle sit I've had to date. When I build another one I'm going to add about 2" to the height of the bottom panel so that it cups just a little bit better. But I had to do very little adjustment over the course of 5 hours. I was used to having to mess with my kestrel about every 30-45 min. It also allow me to tether head at head height.

Nice looking design, man! Kinda looks like a cross between a tactisaddle and a latitude method. Cool.

Is that bridge all Oplux with a prussik on one end for length adjustment?

Nice work!

Thanks. I’ve had the general idea in my head for quite a while, just finally got around to it. When I saw the latitude I almost just bought it, but wanted to try with just the belt instead of the second panel.

the bridge is oplux, but not adjustable (figure 8s). That one pic was just taken before I cut the tail off.

I am unfamiliar with the tactisaddle. Curious about the benefit of a separate belt and small saddle, more or less, versus just a larger saddle? Is it just weight and packability? Or does it allow you to spread load better somehow? I have been thinking on building an oversized mesh saddle.

I find the main benefit of a two panel saddle is that the bottom panel doesn’t ride up like single panel saddles. You can position it where you want it and it stays there.

Gotcha. That is certainly a significant perk.

a couple things that i think are an improvement.

- as compared to just one larger seat, you can lay it out so that nothing goes over your hip bone.
- I never liked having to run the belt portion of a saddle lower than my actual waist to keep it from riding up. You could definitely make a larger one (and there are some already out there) that are large enough to run the belt up higher and still cup your backside.
- I can use the girth hitch/prussics from the tether/saddle connection to adjust pressure and the belt acts as a back band. I'm running the belt just above where my pants belt is.
- I like wearing a belt on my pants, and it keeps off any pressure from that.
- I can set the belt/back support where I want, and adjust the seat as needed without moving the whole thing.
- it may be marginally lighter, less mesh in the seat, but you do have more webbing.

I am a leaner 95% of the time. I do think a bigger saddle may be better for someone who is primarily a sitter.

Well im intrigued. And im all out of projects currently. Im about a 50/50 leaner sitter.
