I ordered an auto wind fly reel for my pull up rope. I know someone said they used one here. Problem is it wont feed out 20' w/o the spring getting too tight. I put it on my fly rod and put a hand crank reel on my bag for my bow rope. I like the fly line as it is stiff enough so it doesn't blow around and catch on twigs. really light wt and quiet. I had an HSS ribbon reel and it caught on every small twig in the area of my tree.

I found that as well. The automatic fly reel is also pretty heavy, much heavier than a manual fly reel. I use paracord.

What model reel, and what kind of pulll up rope?

I got 50' of 1.75mm zingit and no tension problems on my Shakespeare 1822 reel.

I have the Shakespeare green one for a throwline. My dad also has one on a fly rod. I have used the flyrod a few times. Your arm really feels it compared to a manual fly reel after a few hours.

^^ This is so true. They're also much less dependable as they get gunked up and wet.

Shakespear green auto reel w/ floating fly line.I ran the spring all the way loose and can only get less than 20' before the spring is tight enough to lift my bow off the ground.

They have model numbers on the back, usually...

So I bought one to mess with...my advice, buy a Doyle’s, switch the line out to Lash-It like I did and call it a day. Doyle’s works a lot better imo. I have 35’ on mine and it weighs just over 9oz.

This has me interested.. so you take the doyle's apart and switch whatever it had in it with the lash-it? What size lash-it?

Yep. It’s actually pretty easy to do. I did find that about 35’ is all you can use because the spring just runs out of turns. Lash it is 1.75mm. I wouldn’t recommend using it for pulling up something heavy because it probably won’t feel great on the hands, but for my typical situations it will be just fine.

Been using a lew's strapper retriever for some years now. What's some advantages of the doyle gear hoist?

I haven’t heard of that one, but the Doyle’s is nice because it’s self retracting. That’s about it really. I wish it was smaller but after messing with these things for a bit I’ve discovered you can’t make them much smaller because of the spring inside.

I've modified mine by removing the plastic buckles and added nite ize gear ties.
