We have had some issues with them. Penetration issues, deflection, and lack of deployment. Sometimes we ended up finding the deer, but a couple of times we did not.
I’ve personally had one of these heads deflect off of ribs and simply slice open the hide outside of the rib cage. The angle was not too extreme, and if I hadn’t seen it happen, I would have been very skeptical myself.
Had a cousin I hunt with constantly shoot a doe at close range, broadside, and the entry/exit wound showed proof that one blade did not deploy. This arrow also deflected inside the cavity wrote exiting where it should not have. Luckily, we recovered this deer, and were able to see the evidence.
I hope they have fixed the issues, but we have decided to switch to fixed heads, and/or smaller mechanicals (also going heavier on arrows for more penetration) because it’s just not worth the risk of sounding an animal and not finding it. I get sick every time I think of hitting a critter and not making a quick, ethical kill. I know it happens, but I want to do everything I can to minimize the possibility.
I’m not slamming these heads at all! I have also seen where they worked perfectly, and opened a coke-can sized hole and the deer fell within site. I just wanted to recount some of the bad that came with the good experiences we’ve had with them.
