Gnarly trees - One Stick or Multiple Sticks

So you can technically climb with ANY of the methods mentioned. Some just might not be as easy but all are doable. For example, on a straight tree, with my onestick setup with 4 steps aider, I can get up to 20 ft with 3 moves. But if there are any limbs, depending on where they are, I would have to add 2-3 more moves to get around them. This is not such an issue with multiple sticks because you are stopping to setup the next stick anyway. Also you might be fighting gravity with aiders on other then straight tree.

2TC you are doing a lot of small movements, so getting around limbs doesn't add too much issues.

Tree steps let you incorporate existing limbs into the route.

Rope throw sucks......no other way around it. If you can present,

Either way, practice is usually the deciding factors.

But yeah, staying on the group and making a natural blind might be worth considering too if you can give up the beautiful view from height (which I can't).
Man I can’t give up the view! That is such a big part of the enjoyment of the hunt for me. Super helpful post thanks.

Wanted to circle back and let you guys know what I did. Ended up getting 4 One sticks and a 3 step aider before this season started. I hate the aider and stopped using it. The sticks get me high enough most of the time. Didn’t do anything really gnarly this year but the sticks worked great! Love the weight savings and built in attachment method. Appreciate everyone that chimed in and helped me on this one.

Same time up the tree as rope steps, but lighter and quieter.

I'm with you on the multiple step aider, I've tried a couple of different one and end up leaving them at home. What I've done this year for extra height using 4 Skeletor sticks is use a webbing daisy chain looping the ends over the top step end of my stick. This lets the webbing hang around 15" below the bottom step making a great one step aider. When I step from the aider to the bottom step on the stick I remove the aider, sling it around my neck and reinstall it on the next stick I hang. I can easily get 18 to 20 feet with minimal effort. This lets me typically get between 4 1/2' to 5' per stick with a 20" stick. This can easily give you an option when you need more height with minimal extra stuff in your pack---just one webbing daisy chain rolled up.

Swapped from one sticking to hunting out of a .5 and climbing with 3 EWO 15” doublestep sticks. BWMG moveable 2 step aider with S hook. I’m a short guy and hit 18-20’ easy to my stand platform. Tried the 3 step aider but for some reason I just can’t get sturdy on it. Gonna have to give it more practice this spring.
