I originally ran 10mm white static line for my safety/linemens belt. I’m looking to upgrade to a more practical color and opted for Samson Predator rope. They offer various splicing options and I’d rather have a professional do it, pay extra and have that piece of mind. I’m curious which option would be the safest and most practical for a saddle hunter?

Hand or Sewn splices for clipping in carabiners on the end and for wrapping a rope through itself to secure myself to the tree.

I already ordered the Predator platform, can’t have them taking all of my money! Lol

If I didn’t already have carabiners etc I would go through them. I just need the rope, and it’s mainly because I just want camo rope vs white/grey. Hard sell for me there.

I noticed the spliced loops on th e last @flinginairos video, I feel like I missed that one, have folks been using spliced or sewn loops for tethers and lineman belts all along? Criminal!

Dye the color of your rope with RIT Dye. It's cheap and works good. I've used it on some of my ropes with good luck. Just use black or dark brown. The final result will depend on the original color of your rope, but it will be a lot darker. Just follow directions on the label and use a five gallon bucket.

Optimally a hand splice is better. The rope is locking down on itself. You can have that backed up by having that sewn as well if you want.

For professionally spliced ropes there's no difference in safety, hunting is a very light duty application for a quality climbing rope. Sewn splices are a little bulkier and not as clean looking to my eye but functionally they're fine. Consider a tight eye for the lanyard to keep the carabiner from flopping around as much.

I have been using them for a couple years. I spliced all my own. The Predator rope will make you want to cry and sell all your saddle gear. Yale Bandit is easier. It’s a cool skill to have but not a fun one. Haha!

Yeah, I've spliced all my predator applications too. It definitely results in a few blisters. Problem is that after a bit I forget just how much work it is and start another project with it and there I am making another splice. I have learned a few tricks though with the tapering that has eased it some but its still tough to get the eye fully buried.

I certainly don't mind the effort, and good tutorials? Recommended tools? I'll probably call up treestuff.com

I spliced my ultra tech with nothing more than a fid and two large sailmakers needles using them as awls.

Go to YouTube and search “New England rope double braid splice”. That vid helped me more than any other. He explains how to do it very clearly. He uses big rope but it’s the same for what we are using.

Thanks it is on my watch list! Another question, what rope are folks getting these days? I noticed Yale Bandit is no longer being produced. Was it a 16 strand or 24 strand? I spoke to the folks at Treestuff.com and they recommended Yale Aztec and Blaze, and Samson Velocity and I think I've seen someone here mention Samson Predator, but I was curious what folks liked, I think all of those mentioned do not come in a hunter friendly color and would require dying. Also, I'm curious which ones folks like or what they are using.
