Helium rope mod with a prusik?

I’m feeling modest (do you see what I did there!)

I’m considering chopping my Helium’s down and doing a rope mod. The cam buckles need to go. I have a few thoughts/question.

1. I want to go with the 21” step spacing. Do I cut the top or the bottom of the stick off? Or does it matter? Seems like I have seen both ways.

2. Has anyone tried pre-tying a prusik or other friction hitch on the tree rope? My thought is that by doing so you throw the rope around the tree, hook the prusik loop over the versa button/bolt and pull the rope tight. No wrapping or tying knots in the dark. Is there any reason this is a bad idea? I think if this method works I can use a hardened bolt with a spacer and washer to make a low profile stud instead of buying a versa button.

3. Can you use a prusik or other friction hitch on amsteel? My gut says no but I thought I would ask. I think you can woopie sling it but I don’t think that application would work here.

4. What type and size of rope do you guys prefer for the rope mod?

Thanks guys.

At first read I like the prusik idea. But then thinking about it wouldn’t it be easier just to make some wraps on a Versace button rather then hooking a post and then making a prusik adjustment that will take two hands unless you figure a way to tend it?

As far as the amsteel and using a prusik idk if it would work. Never tried it. However my gut says there just isn’t enough there with amsteel. It’s basically a sheath for a rope with no core. This is what makes it so light and packable but also means there’s no meat to it so I doubt you’d get reliable bite with a friction hitch.

If you don’t want to buy versa buttons there are diy mods. The other thing to consider is if your going to use amsteel for it, and want to use a post rather then a button, you could consider a Whoopi sling? It would function as your envisioning a prusik and then you could just hook it on the post and pull the tag end and it’s set.

Ok, so I spent some time playing around with this project tonight. All I had to experiment with rope wise was some retired dynamic rope and 8mm prusik cord. Not exactly ideal but I mocked it up and tried it on a stick. It was easy to hook the prusik over the post, but as was said, you really need two hands to set the prusik. I was able to slide it with one hand, but I could not tension the rope with one hand. It did hold securely (never mind the dynamic stretch), but it isn’t any faster or easier than tying off to/wrapping a post.

To the guys using amsteel: How are you attaching the locked brumel (so?) to your button or post? A close up picture of the setup would help steer me in the right direction.

I’m using amsteel on my API sticks with versa button. My 1/4” amsteel is attached to the versa button with a locked brumel.

Is the brumel large enough to slip over the button without having to remove the button to install? If so, do you ever have the rope come unhooked when handling?
