I got an old set of spurs from (Bellsouth Pole gaffs)from my uncle and was wanting to give them a try. If I go in this direction, what can i do to improve the leather straps that are on them. I have read on here that pole gaffs are good to use, but stay away from thick bark trees.

If the current setup is safe to use try them like they are. If you can’t get comfortable using them there is no reason to do the mods. I have the climb rights with ultralight shin cup style pads and am considering going to smaller j pads just so they will pack better. Shouldn’t be wearing them more than five minutes anyway. The main reason people modify the straps is noise and ease of putting them on in the tree.

If you're talking about silencing them, I just used smaller strips of duct tape to "secure" or "stiffen" up moving parts. The duct tape just takes the open free movement of the buckles and stuff. I also added some string to the inside of the rollers on the buckles to help minimize metal to metal contact.
I just picked up a set from from off here and it looks like the same pads. I will probably add some thicker padding for comfort, but I've been able to get up and down a tree in a breeze!! But like mentioned above you shouldn't be wearing them for too long anyways.
Spurs and a couple of primal steps and wham!!!

Practice starting low on a tree that you would consider sacrificial. Go up and down several times getting a little higher each time. I doubt you’ll hurt it but it may look like something attacked it before your done.

Yea. everything looks find just some aging on the straps, but overall they are in decent shape. Thanks for the info

I have seen guys replace the leather straps with webbing straps and quick release buckles. That might would help them pack a little better. But they strap to a small pack just fine. I sewed some molley webbing points onto the pack to give me some good cinch points to secure items to the outside of my pack. Easy on, easy off with these easy grab tie down bungees

I replaced the top strap with a 1.5" webbing and buckle. Bottom with 1" webbing and a g hook.

Thanks WASP. I still got to try them out and find out if they are for me. I will definitely go this route!
