Folks, Ive been hunting since I was 10 or so years old. I got really good at nailing down buck behavior, patterns, and how they bed for most the farms I hunted. However, I still get schooled some days, today being one of them.
Went out today after planning all week my strategy for closing in on a monster of a buck. I have his beds located (super thick clear cut on an old xmas tree hill), and good sense of what he does (travel routes). I spent all morning slowly still huntiing to his territory, and waited about two hours for some sign he was home. I didnt get too close as I dont want him knowing he’s being hunted. But I could see his bed.
Well, after all morning of nothing… I go to walk home taking the easy route of just walking along the wide open field adjacent. And who is standing out in the open at 12 noon but the monster Im after. Unfortunately, he was out of range for the smoke pole. And I couldnt approach him as it was a wide ipen field. So i stayed along the trees and just watch him hang with a doe he had locked down until they walked away from me out of sight in the next plot of woods (i tried calling but he’d look my way then ignore it).
So the ‘rules’ are a big old monster buck would never be out in open during gun season middle of the day. Except for when he does and you never built a strategy and approach around the idea he’d be so dumb. But I guess I still have a lot to learn about these wild animals. Love is clearly a powerful force.
