The Google says there are 2.1 million acres of public land in Louisiana. What a blessing!
We also know that hunter numbers have been, and remain in decline. Bad news for the long term political and economic voice of hunters, but good news in the short term for those of us who do hunt and a wonderful opportunity for our children.
My son and I went to Area 3 to get an early start on the season this past weekend. We chose a likely area after just a little research and got ready to go.
We are "saddle hunting" this year in order to expand our opportunities by being highly mobile and adaptable. We don't plan on hunting the same tree twice.
This early hunt was an opportunity for us to tune up and practice our techniques and strategies for the October 1st opener. While we've done several practice secessions over the last month, there's nothing like a full on shake down hunt to prove concepts.
The weekend played out very well. We hammock camped, scouted and made four hunts. We found deer every hunt. I drew my bow twice on deer, but did not loose and arrow. My son drew three times and was able to slip and arrow into a mature doe. We were just shy of half a mile off the road and decided to break the doe down and pack it out. This was our first time doing this and thanks to Warren Womack's video it was easy. The Mystery Ranch Pop-up 28 worked as touted.
I kid you not it was tough, challenging hunting primarily due to the heat, but it was wonderful time of fellowship and learning.
