Anyone have any info on deer activity in Kentucky, LBL area. Are acorns dropping? I am 6 hrs away but was planning a trip soon but hot weather may change my mind. Thanks for any info in advance.

I have an IL farm about an 1.5 hours north of LBL and as of this past Sunday not many acorns on the ground yet. I would say still a few weeks out.

Are they always this late.

@Goat Man I’m currently living in Louisville for Grad School but am from Murray, KY which is right next to LBL. I helped farm the row crop in LBL throughout high school and college and still hunt there some. I’d be happy to give ya any help or advice if you want it, no guarantees on how it will work out tho haha

I don’t know if youve hunted there before, but its tough getting on deer consistently. Is this your first time going to LBL?

I’m hitting the woods tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday in central KY so Ill let ya know what I see in terms of oaks. May very well be different in LBL tho.

I have hunted all around LBL but on private lease as a guest. Tried some corp. Engineer land , people everywhere. Hoping saddle hunting can get me to some places deeper in the woods away from the crowd. Been around the Cadiz area mostly. thanks for responding. Wll take all the help I can get.

@Goat Man the deer density within LBL is practically abysmal compared to the surrounding areas. It’s so different because of being basically an island and also due to the low crop/forest ratio there. There’s just not enough food to support a big herd. That being said, when they recently revoked the “bonus” buck status of LBL the number of bucks older than 1.5 and 2.5 should be on the rise. In fact, I know of a couple big ones (150”) that were killed out there last year.

The quota rifle hunt sees a lot of pressure but most bow hunters you'll see over there aren’t your typical weekend warriors.

I’ve had better luck and have killed some good bucks on some other public land in western KY but LBL is always a fun challenge and you’ll never lack for a spot on 170,000 acres.

Shoot me an email at cduncan17@murraystate.edu and I’ll try and send you some maps with a couple of spots marked on it.

Now all you gotta do is kill a big boy and send some pics our way!

Acorn Update
The white oaks and pecan trees were raining them down on this afternoons hunt. Also my Cuddeback usually sends 1 email a day with deer picks. I have received 3 emails in the past 24 hours. The cold front really has them on there feet. I also killed a good 8 here in TN yesterday
