Knotty trees

Just started using the helium sticks this year, and like them quite well. Last night I climbed a locust tree that had several big knots and it was a pain. Either one of the standoffs is on a knot and the other won’t stick in the tree, or the knot is in the middle of the stick and my size 15 boot can hardly get a toe hold. I also use the daisy chains if that makes a difference. Anyone have any tips on climbing these trees?

I dealt with a similar issue recently, and the trunk of the tree was way too wide for my straps. After that, I decided to keep three Ameristep screw-in steps from my old treestand days in my backpack to bridge the gap when I can't seem to get my sticks in a certain spot. That seems to be the best solution for me, but obviously wouldn't be feasible on most public lands.

This kind of situation is why I also own WE steps. As long as the tree isn’t too big around, you can usually get the steps to work where the sticks might have a hard time. I try to scout an area ahead to see if I should bring the steps instead of the sticks. Or if it’s the first time into an area with no scouting before hand, I’ll bring the steps anyway just in case.

Size fifteen boots? you must be 7' tall!!
Rope climbing would be best for those kinda trees,as well as the giant trees.
