I would like to try saddle hunting. The saddles that I would like to try all have long waiting lines. Would it be a bad idea to use a regular tree harness (seat of the pants) as a temporary saddle. I can run the bridge and my lineman's belt through the rings on the side. I do realize that it is not going to be the most comfortable setup and will probably end up being a short sit. I just want to get a bit of experience while waiting on a saddle.... but want to know if this is a crazy stupid idea and could end up in a heap at the bottom of a tree:)

Thoughts??

I think it would depend on the harness. If it belts together securely, I suppose it would be OK. It may or may not be comfortable???

As with any device that is used outside of its intended functionality, the liability is all yours...

Hopefully, others with practical experience will chime in.

Thanks swd. I just learned of another saddle company (Trophyhunter) that is not months on backorder.... It also includes a lot of accessories as well:) Probably going to give this a try.

Ooops.... Trophyline..... I kept seeing that they were no longer making them, but looks like they are back

Check out the DIY section and search "fleece saddle" the user @DaveT1963 has a couple simple videos to get started.

Another option that you will run into on here is modifying (easy to do) the sit drag. Pair that with a $35-40 rock harness and you are set.

I personally have never hunted out of a regular tree harness like you would a saddle. I would start with a fleece saddle or sit drag. That way you can actually get a realistic feal of what it will be like.

Another option and probably your best option would be to keep an eye open in the classified or make a "WTB saddle" post in the classifieds. (want to buy). Theres usually a few per week that get posted. Good luck! Be safe and have fun.

I’m using black diamond rock climbing harness until my mantis arrives. You can pick up a new one brand new for ~$50 at moose jaw.com.

I'm using a muddy safety harness with a sit drag saddle this year. It's as comfortable as my muddy hangon stand. Sat about 5 hours in it on friday afternoon and was fine. All in I've spent roughly $120 to $130
