Lineman's and Tether rope of choice?

What should be the choice for a newbie on a partial budget: for both the Lineman's and Tether rope, carabineer and such. I'm capable of DIY if pointed in the correct direct, especially if it gets me better quality equipment for the same cost of lower commercially made equipment. Thanks. I also understand that there is possibly 100 or more opinions. That is okay.

Unless said newbie is very experienced at making ropes, id go with buying a pre-made setup, purely for safety. I use a tethrd tether and I use a lineman rope that came with my Muddy Harness back before I saddle hunted.

Agreed. Yeah maybe I should reword my original comment when I said DYI. I am no maker of rope no do I play one on "YouTube". Rather I would be comfortable tying the knots on the pieces rope.

Being new to saddle hunting I'm also curious why you would have 2 different ropes - seems having 2 "tethers" would serve the same purpose but give some flexibility. Maybe someone with more experience can chime in on that one...

Buying oplux from DanO is a very easy route. He can cut to size and you can tie a couple figure 8 knots

The idea is to always remain attached to the tree. So undoing a lineman’s belt to transform it into your tether leaves you exposed.

I've used almost all of em going back to when I used the stuff Hunter Safety Systems sells (big bulky knots with noisy metal on them), DIY stuff, to two years ago using the lineman and tether sold by Tethrd (good stuff but too bulky for me) to last year buying the the 8mm Sterling Oplux Tactical Saddle Line with the sewn eye sold by Wild Edge Inc.

Far and away that has been the best I've used (for me) for its combination of low weight, low bulk (no knots and 8mm diameter), and strength. Liked it so much as a tether i bought another this year to use as a lineman's belt so those will be the only two ropes i bring in the woods with both EASILY stored in one saddle pouch.

On that note i highly recommend avoiding a ropeman if you dont have one. I used two of them for a couple years but was frustrated that i could never find a lot of info on how safe they were and then started finding incidents where ropes were damaged during short falls as it clamps down so tight it flattens the rope. I just never felt comfortable with the unknown (lack of weight ratings) when my life depended on it and the extra metal i was bringing into the woods as the one on my linemans belt would occasionally clank on a stick or something when i was setting up. I switched back to prusiks this year and bought two of the "Poor Man Ascenders" from Wild Edge when i bought the additional Sterling Oplux line from them. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they work to free the prusik using one hand when climbing a tree! Literally works just as well as the more expensive Ropemans and at only $4.99. I personally wont miss the Ropemans one bit, i realize there are a lot of fans of them here.

I use these carabiners, light weight and strong with a 24KN rating. Most of the biners that i bought from hunting related companies would squeak when i was screwing them in or out whereas these have always been silent even in sub zero weather. The squeak wasnt loud but I never liked it nonetheless https://www.metoliusclimbing.com/element_belay_carabiner.html

You could buy the whole set up from Wild Edge Inc (minus the Metolius Biners) https://www.wildedgeinc.com/store/p74/KISS_Line_Kit.html#/ or just buy the components as you see fit and put your own system together. If you do buy your own Sterling Oplux you would likely have to tie your own knots though which will add bulk, these have a factory sewn eye so the bulk is basically the same as a spliced eye. The bulk may not bother you but i said that at first too, just a thought.

Honestly though, you will likely NEVER stop tinkering or tweaking your kit!

You climb with your Linemans belt attached, set up your platform then your tether, hook into your tether and climb onto your platform and put weight on your tether, once youre positive all is connected and well detach your linemans belt and store it in your saddle pouch or pack.

Its all about safety as youre never disconnected from the tree.

I use the same type of rope (8mm Sterling Oplux) for my tether and my linemans belt.

My top recommendations (in no certain order) would be.

Tethrd ropes...they sell both tether and linemans.

Wild edge: they sell both as well.

Eastern Woods Outdoors (DanO). Very customizable and one stop shopping.

Samson predator rope is also a popular option.

Sterling OpLux is becoming a favorite for guys that like lightweight, packable ropes.

Right now most stuff is on sale and its worth it to get premium. You will get very close to "budget friendly" with sale prices and be very happy if you buy nice ropes. I would highly recommend spliced lines if you can get them. OpLux rope is great and the knots really dont add much bulk but if going with a larger diameter rope you will be much happier with spliced or sewn eyes.

Another side note: the ropeman 1 is an amazing tool for quick adjustments especially on your linemans rope. I can almost guarantee you'll end up with one. If that's the case they are rated for larger ropes and can be found for $35-45. Smaller diameter ropes take the Kong duck ~$60. They are basically the same but that's a whole topic on it's own and they are not necessary just very convenient and something to keep in mind.

Wild edge and tethrd sell great carabiners with their ropes. DanO will also send the perfect carabiner for you.

Always dry your ropes after a hunt if they get wet, if you dont they might up smelling like a wet dog...I learned that the hard way.

* I mentioned above that there are sales going on right now so keep in mind there will be cheaper options but now is a good time to get something you wont regret. A good way to save money would be to buy rope by the foot and splice/tie your own knots but regardless I would recommend purchasing quality rope.

Hope that helps a bit good luck!

I totally get the purpose of them, but if I had a 8' rope with a prussik, 5" spliced eye and a stopper knot, is there a reason it couldn't be either? The ropes are not constructed differently, right?

Yep youre right they arent constructed differently in any way. Both my tether and my linemans are identical and could be used for either purpose.

Thank you for the reply. Very informative and will give me some things to consider.

Hello i am also new to saddle hunting and was wanting to upgrade my Samson predator rope to oplux. I have ordered it from Dano, 18 ft and the appropriate oplux try for my prussics 5ft. Anyway I was wanting to see 1. How you guys cut oplux I have access to hot knives at my job and 2. What knots do you guys use to create your loops and also your stopper knots on the ends. Thank you guys so much I have learned so much on this forum
