I am new to the saddle hunting idea, and have been a ladder stand or ground dweller all my life. I have recently been hunting public land and needless to say those options are not working for me with cumbersome loads to get as far back away from others or having to deal with over growth to block visibility. saying all that, I am a big man, 6'3" 330lbs ex football player and wanted to know if this would be right for me. I see most on YouTube that weigh less than 250 so would saddle hunting be safe and comfortable for me ? what would be the best climbing method for someone never using sticks or steps before? any advice is welcomed, and thanks as I am a newbie from Valdosta, Georgia, anyone near me?

also I have a hss rope style tree strap would that work for my tether if i got a saddle or would i need something stronger?

I think most gear is rated for 300#. I’d look into the rating on the saddles available. I’m sure there is something that will work. Maybe look into rock climbing harnesses as a back up fall protection device if the saddles are not rated high enough for you. Arborist sites such as http://www.wesspur.com/rope/rope-climbing-line.html
https://www.treestuff.com/store/start.asp?category_id=2
and https://rwrope.com/ have rope ratings listed. Your HSS rope will work as a tether but I’m not sure what’s its rating. Shouldn’t be hard to find out.
Lone wolf and helium climbing sticks are probably the easiest sticks to start with for climbing a tree. The use of a linemans belt will help free both hands up so you can put on each stick without having to hold the tree. A lot lighter guys have experienced the v-bar or steps on the sticks break so that’s something else you will have to look into.
Where there is a will, there is a way. Good luck on your search to rig you out a saddle system.
