Muddy pro question

Anyone ever have the cam not grab the rope well? One sticking for the first time and a few inches were giving. Not sure if it was my technique pulling stick away from the tree instead of straight down.

You still have to re-adjust the rope every time you move the stick up the tree and push down on it to reset it!
 
When I push down to set a couple of inches move through the cam before catching/locking.

I’m going to mess around with it before taking it back up a tree.

Are they new sticks? I’ve heard of quite a few people saying the new ones slip if the knot isn’t tied behind the cam.. I have an older one I bought used on here and it has no slip in it whatsoever.

Hmm, not sure if that’s some of the new ones or not.. I read somewhere that the springs they use in the cams aren’t quite strong enough to get a good bite on the rope, but if you open them by hand and kinda let it snap back on the rope it will bite much better. I can’t remember the thread that I saw that on??
 
Yep I have the older ones also and I have no problem with them slipping but I still tie a half hitch with the tag end! But even when I didn't they didn't slip!
 
Make sure you’re tying a half hitch after you go through the cam. I always did 2 to be sure
 
The new sticks the spring isn’t as strong.I had to find an older muddy pro to 1 stick.
No issues with slipping on the older model.

I just bought an older one on here and it locks up solid!
 
Check out Mark Dohring's video on the Muddy Pro's. Looks like you have to tie the knot(s) and the tolerances are not as good as like a beast stick. If you go with the Stacked Outdoors sticks you do not have to worry about these kinds of tolerances. Just another option to consider I am not affiliated with any business.

Thinking that is my issue. How much of a pain in the ass is it to tie and untie a half hitch while 1 sticking at every move up the tree? Also would adding a larger diameter rope make things more snug and prevent that slipping?

I don’t tie the half hitch while climbing so I can’t say how much of a hassle that will be. The stick was never meant to be used for
1 sticking so I’m not going to recommend you do the same but I will say it’s much fast without it.
My recommendation is buy an older model stick with the better cam lock.
As for larger rope I can not say because I use the stock rope and never had a need to replace.
On a side note keep your fingers out from between the tether rope and tree Incase your stick slips down the tree.
Very painful if this happens and all your body weight and force suddenly trap your hands in the girth hitch.

Someone on here said they called muddy and the rope needed to be 8-9mm. I took mine into tractor supply and tried bigger ropes.... if you go to big the teeth on the cams won’t rotate enough to get a bite.
