About to hit submit on some Double Steps from Eastern Woods Outdoors to replace the stock folding steps-can’t deal with all the play while standing on them at height. My only question is which bolt replacement package should I order with them? I intend to keep the original standoffs. I have a feeling the hole that was originally drilled out in the Stick for the folding steps is larger than the bolts they sell.

Finally got around to setting up my Muddy Pro’s with the Double Step and Oplux rope mod and some fun with the rattle can. Very happy with how much more secure they feel on the tree-I’m sure the original fold up steps were plenty safe-Just couldn’t get used to the play especially at height. The longer rope better be worth the effort because the Oplux was not easy to thread through the hole in the stick post-although I did stumble on a technique that worked great by the time I was on the last stick. lol. One final note-I decided to stay with the original standoffs because they stacked a lot better than other standoffs. This means I had to secure some 5/16 bolts from DanO and drill the hole in the steps to 5/16. DanO did offer to pre drill the steps-I elected to drill them myself.

These came out super nice bro? I may be over looking but what sized rope you end up using? Also wondering if the sticks are any lighter now?

The scale hovers right around 2.3-2.4. That’s including the addition of the 8’ Oplux. Originally they were 3+lbs a stick.

Had several PM’s on how to do the rope modification and how it went. Figured I would post my response if it helps anyone.

“I’m almost 100% positive the rope diameter on the original Muddy ropes are 8mm. According to a few posts I’ve read not even Muddy knew exactly what size ropes they were using if you can believe that! So I personally elected to go with Oplux which is 8mm. I would not believe anyone that put any larger of a diameter rope through the original sized post hole. If they went to 9mm or higher they would have to enlarge the hole. Pushing the rope through the hole was truly a PIA!!!! It simply would not thread through the hole without the out sheath unraveling. Not matter what I did it just wouldn’t go through easily. By the last Stick I tried cutting the tag end of the rope into a point/triangle. Sort of like this ( -——> ). Once I cut the end of the rope into a point and lightly melted the core to the sheath it went right through the post hole without any issues. When taking your old ropes out take a look at the knot they used. It was simply a half hitch at the very end of the rope then stuffed into the post. The original rope is coated with some sort of epoxy or glue in order to prevent the tail end of the knot from slipping through-I used hot glue. Make sure the knot is in the post first. If you try to glue the knot first, and the glue hardens it might be too big to stuff back in. Once the knot was in the post I squeezed a bunch of hot glue in the post until it started to come out. I have climbed with them 3x with no issues whatsoever. I went with an 8 foot length. The average length on my original Muddy ropes were 6 feet (not all were same length). “

I have been researching this mod. Thank you for the information. I'm assuming that there is a 5/16 hole in the tube that secures the DanO step and standoff? Are you using the supplied muddy 5/16 bolt? Thanks

The posts in the Muddy Pro sticks are drilled for the original 5/16 bolts that are permanently fixed to the folding steps. Since they are permanently fixed to the original folding steps you will have to order from DanO new bolts 2 per stick. Be sure when you order you write in the notes that you need 5/16 for the Muddy Pro. Reason you have to annotate that is you are clicking on the bolts for Lone Wolf sticks when you click on it to purchase. The steps and standoffs are not drilled to 5/16 from DanO but rather the bolt size of the Lone Wolf bolts. When I communicated with DanO about what I needed he stated that they could drill them (not sure the charge) however, drilling than out to 5/16 was very easy so I elected to do it. I only had to drill out the steps to 5/16 because I stayed with the original Muddy Standoffs as they stacked much better than different standoffs I tried-They were more low profile and allowed for the bolt on the cleat to nest in the hole on the back of the post. So In my set up all I needed were two 5/16 bolts per stick, two steps (that I drilled to 5/16), and I stayed with the original standoffs as in my opinion they were the best fit.
