sharing a long post about my early season hunt in the Nebraska sandhills - complete with pics and a couple videos.

I bagged a doe on my 3rd day. I was on this trip with my dad, and in the background of the trip, my wife just had foot surgery a week before leaving. So I only had 4 full days in Nebraska. So by the 3rd day, I really wanted to bag a deer and be ready to head home. Even still, it was absolutely worth every cent of the draw tag price - the experience and what I learned was worth it, plus the time with my dad was invaluable.

There were a lot of mistakes I made to learn from: better selecting trees to climb, not trying to sneak along the edge of anything deer could bed in, not moo'ing at any deer within 20yards, and finally, don't assume some out of state thing will put a buck in your lap. I didn't see any antlered deer my days there save one spike on the first night.

I'd do it all again. The doe is mighty tasty and got me amped for our Oct 1 opener!

That was a GREAT write up, I really enjoyed reading it. It felt like I was right there with you. Congrats on a successful first out of state hunt!

Awesome story! The older I get the more I realize I would take a doe with a great story in beautiful country over a big buck in my back yard any day.

I definitely would have taken a big buck! But I think that's still a bit outside my skill set... also with limited time and competing interest (time with my dad mainly), I wasn't trying to hit it as hard as possible going after the biggest deer I could lay eyes on.

i did fall in love with the country out there, though. stunningly beautiful! appreciate all the kinds word, yall.

Great Story! Instant follow. I did my first hunt west last October (Wyoming for Elk), and I'm setting sights on some sort of plains hunt for antelope and whitetails. The scale of it all is awe inspiring. Your post took me back, thanks!

I finally had time to swing back to this. Great write up and excellent story telling. Congrats on a successful hunt. Thanks for sharing this experience with us.

It is a fun place to hunt. Great story. I hunted out there 3 years in a row when it was over the counter. Gonna go back one of these days. I love the open country.

Congratulations on the doe. Some of the best tasting deer I have ever had from out there.
