Need reviews on a Warren and Sweat Hang-on

This week I found a Warren and Sweat hang-on at a local Goodwill for $15. I know stands are a form of blasphemy around here, but I couldn’t resist the temptation. I only have 26 trips around the sun under my belt so I have zero experience with an archaic stand like this. I was hoping some of the more “senior” members here could chime in if they’ve had experience with these stands?

I’m thinking of changing it into a platform somehow, or perhaps using it as is every now and then?

Thanks in advance!

I’ve had that same stand for more than 25 years. If I want to use a lock-on with sticks it’s still the one I take because it’s light, easy to carry and set-up. I have several old Cabela’s steel stands with detachable tree mounting brackets that are more comfortable but I end up using the aluminum Warren & Sweet if not in the saddle. When mounting on the tree, cinch the strap down tight with the platform vertical, then pull down hard on the stand and cam the platform over to horizontal to lock on the tree. Or climb above the stand, lift the platform up with toe of your boot and push stand down with other foot, then cam lock by pushing platform back to horizontal. Sometimes I’ll strap an Ameristep around the base of the stand on sketchy trees with loose bark. The rectangular platform is not as easy to climb up on as a modern stand with the tapered platforms, but a heck of a lot easier than nailing a pallet onto a tree! Wear your harness, be safe and have fun!
