Hello everyone,

I am from Northwest Ohio. I have been mobile hunting for the past 5 years, started shortly after finding the hunting beast forum on the internet. Up to this point I have been using Lone Wolf hang ons for my mobile system. I have been seeing a lot of hype about saddle hunting and think I want to give it a try! I am completely new to saddle hunting and looking for suggestions on what to start with. I am 5 feet 10 inches tall and weigh roughly 210 pounds. I am a solid guy with bigger hips / waist I wear a size 38 jeans. I am having a hard time deciding on what saddle to purchase. I like the idea of a lightweight saddle like the mantis but also seem very interested in trying a Jx3 even though it does seem very bulky and heavy. I have heard of some of these saddles pinching the waist of heavier set guys and don't want to purchase one that is going to do that to me. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks and happy hunting!

You have to try them all, or at least as many as you can get your hands on. I'm built similar to you, although I'm sporting a 36 waist. I love my Mantis large. I'm more of a leaner than a sitter. I also have the Predator platform, as opposed to a ring of steps. You might need to go up to the XL, but only you will be able to decide for you. Good luck, and Welcome from MA.

Welcome from Louisiana! I hunt from a size 2 Kite and have a 38” waist. In this setup I have never experienced hip pinch. You may want to check the saddle hunter map link to see if there are any members near you. It’s definitely beneficial to try these saddles out before you purchase.

Welcome from Wisconsin. For comparison, I am 5’ 8” and 185 with 35 waist. I got a large mantis. This is my first saddle also and I haven’t worn it for a hunt yet but it seemed to fit with some room for colder weather bulk when I put it on for a trial run. Your best bet is to try to find someone in your area on the saddle hunter map and connect to see if you can try it on. I’m also thinking XL would be right but like the others have said, every person is a little different. The like-minded guys on this site seem to be very willing meet up to do a trial run.

Welcome - try to locate some guys in your area and try stuff out if that is a possibility. Good luck!

Welcome from Bama! I too am transitioning from Lone Wolf. I went with the Mantis. Should arrive in the next week or so.

Welcome from VA. I'm a bigger guy (6'3" 260) and had the same questions when I first started researching... I wont give my opinion on any particular saddles yet because mine is still not in my mailbox and I wasn't able to test them all. I did spend a lot of time reading on this site and found plenty of information which led me to my decision on which saddle to buy.

The great thing about this site is that you won't just get a bunch of pro-staffers telling you to buy their product. Here you'll get REAL opinions and reviews and those who are affiliated with a particular company will make that known before offering their advice.

There's a map on this site that'll show you where other saddle hunters are located in your area. Check it out and see if anyone is close to you and would be willing to let you try one on.... this is the most helpful and welcoming group of hunters I've found. Good luck, have fun, and be safe.
