My father have these old pole gaffs from a power worker. Going to give them a try this week. Anyone see any issues with them? I’m new to climbing spurs. 553CC89A-622C-4B52-A683-EEDD5A9B2A87.jpeg

Check the straps and buckles for dry rot and rust, spurs for tightness. If all is well start low and go slow.

Ok, I haven’t put my hands on them yet. The leather was the question in my mind too. I can replace it with webbing, correct?

Suppose you could. The leather just distributes the pressure of the straps around your shin/calf area and keeps the shank from digging into you. To be honest I wouldn't get to concerned about moding them too much until your pretty sure your gonna be comfortable using them and they meet your expectations in the field. Used a set like that for years in the tree biz without a single mod. To each their own but I see guys on here moding spurs to only go up 15-20 ft in a tree and it makes no sense to me. Buckles and straps that come standard on most gaffs are more than sufficient in weight and quietness. More importantly safety wise I never had a buckle or strap fail in a tree on me or saw a failure in a tree with a coworker.

Sounds good. I agree safety is number one and climbing up and down even one tree a day for the whole season really is nothing compared to a person working in them daily. I’m not too worried about getting used to them or liking them. I’m a bit of a monkey and surprised I haven’t tried this sooner. It just makes more sense to me than any other climbing system. I know this is personal opinion though. I appreciate your help and knowledge!
