Palmettos anyone?

Hate them and love them. Hunt them here in Louisiana and made it to south central Florida this spring to hunt more of them there but worth it to finish my turkey slam

It was Copperhead heaven in there. The big palmettos were spaced apart and you could walk under. The small ones were packed so tight it was hard to walk through, unless you hit a wasp nest in one, then you would fly through them.

It’s when you are pushing through them at night and one of the palmettos snaps back and gets you on the neck unexpectedly. Gets you moving lol

That’s the craziest thing I seen the 1st time I walked up on one. Thought aliens made crop circles! Lol
Nothing like having a hog 10ft away popping his jaws at you and you can’t see it. Had that happen one time so I started backing out real easy. Jumped a woodcock and liked to sh*t myself.
No wonder we get all them bigfoot stories from southern swamp boys :)

Gotta ask... I ran into a guy that was backpacking in for turkey this last spring that was from Louisiana. If it was you that I met, looks like you found success!

We have huge trespass issues during bumper crop years of saw palmetto berries. Illegals are bussed in, locks and fences cut. There must be money in it.
The bears eat the heart out of the saw palmettos and I eat the heart out of the cabbage palms.

I did meet a local guy one day on a wma while walking a long way back to my truck but I wasn’t back packing. It was a great trip. Killed a nice swamp bird with some beautiful hooks. Saw some pretty woods, deer, eagles and a more than a few birds.

Was it quota hunt? I was there at the wrong time because those birds didn't make a single noise for me haha, lots of tracks though.

Not a quota hunt. This will be my second year putting in for quota hunts. Buddies that have been hunting there for years tell me it takes 3-5 years now to get picked. Hopefully will go back in a few years with some friends that are putting in with me as a group.

This trip my girlfriend was with me. She hung out at the beach and I would drive to the wma. Luckily I brought her scout one afternoon and while I was hooting she heard a few birds that I never could hear. Just enough to put me in the right direction.
