OK, before I send anyone off to DIY this nonsense I want to post a quick disclaimer:

YOU TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK AND SADDLEHUNTER.COM, IT'S OWNERS, OR PARTICIPANTS, DO NOT BEAR ANY LIABILITY FOR ANY INJURY SUSTAINED FOR MODIFYING OR MAKING YOUR OWN SADDLE HARDWARE AND EQUIPMENT.

SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT FOR THIS COMMUNITY. WE EXPECT EVERYONE TO TAKE A COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO THEIR SAFETY WHEN IT COMES TO SADDLE HUNTING AND, IF YOU HAVE ANY RESERVATIONS ABOUT USING EITHER STOCK, THIRD PARTY, CUSTOMIZED, OR DIY GEAR PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THE DEVICE AT HUNTING HEIGHT!

Now that that's out of the way i've had this idea since I started saddle hunting. Just didn't share it for one reason or the other.

We're all looking for better platforms to hunt out of. Whether it's lock-on style base, or a string of ameristeps, or several screw in steps - we all want a more stable, more comfortable platform!

So my idea is fairly basic. I was looking at these platform pedals at REI and thought to myself - if someone could just remove the threaded insert from the pedal and somehow fit it over a tree peg or a lagbolt then BAM! You'd have an excellent platform base!! See my masterful illustration below:

Granted there are some obvious caveats: One, the pedal would rotate. Probably not great while you are groping around in the dark for a step to ascend or descend. Two, maybe that extra rotation movement is not good for other reason ie: rotates around if you step off, making it difficult to step back on, maybe it catches the eye of a wary critter, etc. Three, they're made for bicycling and not for hunting.

Eh, maybe that third one isn't that big of a drawback, since bicycling is arguably as strenuous as saddle hunting.

Still, if someone wanted to try it out i'll happily give away the idea. Though if you sell it and whatnot i expect royalties.

Open to arguments on why / why not this idea is stupid to the max.

Yours truly,

I had thought about this awhile back. I almost went forward with it. The rotating wouldn't be good though. I just made a xop platform and I think it is awesome. Can turn around and shoot in all directions.

I messed with this idea a while back and never could get it to work the way I wanted. I'm sure it could be done though.

Ive got a new pair of peddles that I bought last year. I was going to weld nuts on the side of the Jim Stepp allow the pedals to be threaded on, but like so many ideas, a new one popped into my head and off I went in another direction. lol

I thought about this when I thought I was going to the EZ-Kut and holds system, only instead of a screw in step, I was going to use a bolt. I have talked to a couple guys who use them, and the twisting doesn't seem to be an issue, because it seems to stay perpendicular to the weight being applied to it.

Right. Lag bolts might be easier than tree pegs. I might buy a cheap pair of schwinn pedals off amazon and remove the mounting hardware to see how they might fit.

As cheap as they are (used or scrap) you might treat them as permanent platforms. With the lag screw idea, I might still use them even though I'm going with spurs next year.

There is a old thread on here somewhere discussing this also.

It has been tried. There are pictures floating around here somewhere. I think the general consensus was the idea works. Good luck!
