So this is on some private property of mine in the lower peninsula of Michigan. I can’t tell if this is a lip curl or what’s going on here haha. I figured it was kind of early for this kind of activity. Let me know if you’ve had experience with this before.

Deer and other animals do this lip curl which is called a flehmen response in order to greatly enhance their sense of smell. This is because above their palate they have a special sensory organ called the vomeronasal organ. While it is true that they mostly do this during the rut, because scent is so important in that time, and much of their communication is based on pheromones they will also do this year round basically to investigate other smells.
