I've had some time this week to get out and get some sets put in for the up-coming season. I had gotten 3 or 4 done last week and 2 yesterday. Trimmed and ready for action. These pictures of this particular set is a place that I have killed a bunch of does and had an awesome encounter w/ a three year old that was bedded about 150 yards to the north. I bumped him the first week of the season and let him cool down for about 3 weeks and came back and hunted him on a different wind and approach to my set.I have some luck with that. I've noticed early season you need to give them some time 3-4 weeks and they will return to that primary bed. the rut I don't care. I'll show up the net day if its a good chance I'll see something. Awesome beast style hunt. he came in w/ about 15 minutes of light left. I had 10 different shot opportunities at 25 yards of so. He got down wind and bedded down and I let him walk. Not what I was looking for but awesome night. I think my scent was getting pooled into the pond late and really helped me out. This little pond lies hidden in a pine plantation that was thinned and burned and all the regen came up thick and about chest to head high with needle litter on the ground. You can get in there quiet and having that isolated water source that holds water regardless of how severe a drought might get is an ace in the hole in any instance. I didn't hunt it in 2012 because I found some EHD bucks floating in it.

we ear tagged this guy a a fawn in for a long term deer study in 2010. died as a two year old with a split brow  He would have been awesome.

I wasn't keen on killing anything drinking from that spot and not too keen on shooting much of anything after finding 186 dead deer in 10 days. Bad season.
Anyway I'm looking forward to a early season hunt and maybe a rut hunt out of this spot.

Some of my other sets are really sweet as well. One place in particular I'm after this guy

I'm already getting fired up. It was nice just sitting in a tree yesterday for awhile. I didn't want to get down and felt naked without my bow.
Anyway, I'm heading back out today. Nice and cool but the skeets will bleed you out and the ticks are gnarley. No pain no gain.
Stay thirsty my friends...........

Oh I found this goofy shed as well. Must have gotten injured. I'd like to see the other side b/c it had some circumfrence on the base. I looked but no dice.

Great update! I'm hoping to get out setting up a bunch of my trees over memorial day weekend. Work finally calms down for me after Tuesday.

Its a real shame to see all those dead deer :( . But at least that buck made it through. He is a real slammer, good luck on him! You have inspired me because you just jogged my memory on a spot similar to your pond that I need to go check out for an early season spot. Thanks! Like the aero hunter pics, and also.. that is one serious selfie ;)

Haha. Not a big smiler when getting eaten alive on the hike in by mosquitoes. I got my only relief when up in the tree.

Nice photos Big burner. In the selfie it looks like there is a mosquito kill on your forearm. Those deer in the little pond were gruesome. That said, your spots look pretty sweet. I 've never got a chance to hunt in heavy pine woods, I bet it gets dark real quick after the sun goes down.

I had another go at it yesterday lugging around the gear.

The spot I set up yesterday took me awhile b/c I had lots of trimming and needed to figure out my access without crossing any trails. It might be a one and done but we shall see. The red dot on the map is my stand on that soft transition and the green dots are some of the rubs in the area so it’s pretty indicative of a staging area and all the trees to the east of me are oaks. The purple is some winter doe beds and the blue dots are the primary deer trail. This area is super thick with tons of perimeter cover and these really great transition lines. No topography so that breaks in cover really funnels. The dark green block to the west is some 8-10 yro pines and is the primary doe bedding. That funnel to the east of it is insane so might give that a rut sit if I don't score early and access from that ditch. It has a lot going for it. Gonna have to be super stealthy getting into this spot. When I trimmed up everything I stacked some of the small trees and branches near the base of my tree to hide a lot of my movement when getting set up. Only thing left it to wait it out and see how she hunts.

Hope I don't look too angry in this photo

You look much happier in that photo ;)
That looks like a real nice spot. Even if you only sit that tree once you should definitely be able to get away with hunting that funnel during the rut as well. Looks awesome!

I see that you have a ton of pines to hunt out of. How do you set them up to keep quiet? It looks a lot like where I hunt with my father. I always try to avoid a pine if I can because it seems that no matter how much bark I scrape off there is still a piece that I miss that I will catch and break off or crunch. Plus if I'm using screw in steps the sap really sticks everything up.

That tree was my best option and I try to scrape the heck out of them with my pruning saw. I haven't had any issues in the past wit getting picked off and I have been hunting out of those pines for 15 years. I hit the marsh today and got deep in the phragmites with the waders on and found a ton of beds but the I found one in a hedge row one the way out of the woods that blew me away. I'm pretty sure he watched me walk in and went right past him and it wasn't till I left that I bumbed him and he pretty much is close to un-killable so I have to try to kill him. I don't think I can get within 400 ards of him to be honest. I'll get something together and post up some pictures. I'm also gonna ask the bro's on the beast and see how the think it could pan out.

I do the same thing, I scrape with my saw and I also take my feet and rub them hard up and down anywhere I think there may be contact.

Can't wait to see the pics on the buck you found. I'll make sure to take a look over there to see what everyone has to say, but make sure to keep us updated over here ;)

Our season opens Sept 27.
But due to work travel I will get to hunt the first two days and then will be out of town for a week :(

I am predrilling holes for Treebolts and doing light pruning.
I'm setting up on trails in between bedding and feeding areas right on the edges if small clearings that are still in the woods.
Loads of Acorns and some Persimmon trees.

Once I have all my early season feeding areas set I will continue and set up on Rut activity areas from last year.
This is only my second season....I learned a LOT last year but never took a shot.
This year will be different!

Hoping to do some scouting this weekend. Hoping to get some cameras out tonight. Seeing this makes me want to get out in the woods. Going to be nice and cool this weekend :D

Thanks,
Boswell

About 34 hours now and I'll finally be in a tree again... :D

You're right Boswell, the weather for the weekend looks great for September hunting. Next week looks nice and cool in the low 70s as well. I couldn't ask for more right now!

you gonna hunt a bed? If so good luck!

I have to earn my buck so not until I get a doe. This is one of the few times I do any baiting cause I try to get that doe down quick to buy an extra 3 weeks of buck hunting.

Sunday night looks like a NNW wind which would be perfect for a lot of my beds so I'm hoping to have a doe down before then.

Bring forth the carnage!
I wanted to get out this evening but its my kids birthday. This cold front is giving me a stiffy. I hope I can get out Saturday night. This weather is awesome for early season.

The sacrifices we have to make... lol.

This weather is awesome! Good luck if you get out. Let's put team 2 on the board!

Glassed some fields tonight to figure out where the deer are coming out into the fields so that I can try and preset some trees this weekend. Seen 35 does and little ones and 4 bucks all still in velvet. 22 Days to go :?: what the hell..... this needs to hurry up.

Thanks,
Boswell
