As a total newbie to saddle hunting I have been doing a ton of reading and watching videos. I have some of the Ameristep strap on steps that I am thinking of repurposing to a ring of steps. Is the final concensus that the steps are okay to use if they are not of the dates that were involved in the recall? Mine are mid-year '03. And, for use by a new person, should I go with a platform or just go with the ring of steps? Oh, BTW, I am pretty much tapped out for additional funds for more gear. lol

Thanks for any advice.

That date should be perfectly fine. I'd go ring of steps route if funds are tight and you already have them. You may need an over center boat buckle and strap though or a ratchet straps.

Welcome from Michigan! Lots of guys still using the Ameristeps as long as they aren't recalled. As always, double check your gear and make sure they are solid with no cracks. ROS vs. platform is a personal thing - I'd say try the ROS since you have them. If there are other saddle hunters close to you perhaps you could get together to try out a platform. Update your profile with your state and and look for hosted demo days in your area or organize one yourself. Good luck this fall!

Like @DanO said it's more of a preference really. I tried ros and platform and ended up liking the platform better. A lot of that had to do with me finding a bridge length and tether height I liked. Once I figured that out I found that I liked to leaning more than I liked sitting so the platform ended up working better for me. In my opinion a ring of steps has more advantages from a shooting standpoint but I just felt like I shot better off a platform than I did a ros. Just my two cents from someone who is also green.

Worst that can happen, as long as they’re in good shape, is that you don’t prefer a ROS and you sell those Ameristeps for a generous markup on this site’s Classifieds. I’m sure they’ll sell within minutes at $20/step or more sometimes, so if you don’t like them, then your misfortune will be another man’s deer-kryptonite, hence your fortune. Then go buy a predator or ridge runner lol

Thanks to all for the advice. I will go ahead and try the ROS to see how I do with them and go from there. Everyone have a great summer and be safe.
