I’ve placed Wild Edge steps number 1 thru 8 with use of the aider to reach hunting altitude. Steps number 9 and 10 are roped on side by side for my platform which is at knee level or so above step number 8. I need something above my platform in order to pull myself up onto it. I’m thinking a 1/4 inch Amsteel dog bone girth hitched around the tree and put my hand through the loop on tag end to pull myself onto platform and left on the tree at that point to be used as a gear hanger. Thoughts? Yesterday was a beautiful day here to practice climbing. I’m sore.

I am also going to get an aider. I have 12 steps. So 9,10,11 will be my platform. 12 will be my handhold and used to hang gear off of.

If you put your platform stepps close to step #8 it shouldn’t be an issue but if you trying to get another full step out of it, then yes I think you need something to help, tether could be used. But I like a handhold myself. I save 1 step for that

Justsomedude turned me on to a petzl Williams carabiner for my tie in point on my tree tether. It’s a good size and makes a great hand hold. That’s what I was thinking I’ll try for a pull up onto my platform. Just waiting on my stepps delivery so I can try all these ideas in my head.

CharlieRayT, great question. I started with using my tether but I find it slow and cumbersome when using it with my aider. I use a whoppie sling for my aider and once I have it set for my first step up the tree, I rarely have to adjust it because they are all set at distance apart. So far, my favorite thing to do is an extra step. I do not set my platform as high as a regular step, so I am not using an aider right now on the platform. This was do the issues I was having with the tether. This may change though, now that I have a step above to use as a handle. Regardless, I am so comfortable tying the steps now, and I really like the leverage and stability it gives me when getting on and off the platform (brackets, same as ameristeps for discussion purposes).

So, I am thinking that if I have this extra step above the platform, then I will need to use it for something. You know, two birds and one stone :) I have not played around with it yet. I think I will re-set it once I am hooked in, and place at about chest height. I will place a large hook on the cross bar for the bow then use smaller hooks on the rope to hook my other crap. I think I may even be able to hang my pack off of it somewhere. I plan to try it out in a couple of weeks when the weather is better again and I have some time. Pete

Wild edge sales a bow hanger to attach to a step. I haven’t looked at it closely because I rarely have one left over.

I have it, but honestly I do not love it. I find that it does not lock into place and is a bit unstable at times. I rather use a gear hanger strap.

That’s what I use on my tether and then I clip a webbing aider into it and use the redsquirrel method - the large size is a great hand hold as you climb up with the aider. I don’t need an extra step up above the platform and don’t want the extra bulk / weight to carry in. I tried it once and never did it again. You don’t need it to get up and don’t need it hang stuff from. Using reds method you set the tether as high as you can, put the aider on the carabiner and lift your foot as high as you can- step up onto the aider and pull on the Petzl William and step onto next step/platform. I carried 12 Stepps for the first few hunts and now I’m carrying 7 and that includes 2 extra for a platform around the 5th step - I get 23’
