I have two dogs but the only thing better than having a dog is having LOTS of dogs. My wife and I are considering breeding goldens and could be in the market for the mamma sooner than later which would bring me a fresh pup to train, and my research says goldens are good shed dogs.

On a scale of 1 to 10 of difficulty for an AMATEUR to train a good shed dog with 1 being impossible and 10 being a guarantee that with time, a book or 2 and YouTube videos I will have a good shed dog what would you rate me on that scale.

Any other advice from the pros also encouraged

I'm no expert but I was in the same boat as you. I bought the books, watched the videos, felt like I did my part. My dogs (chocolate lab and golden) would find hidden sheds around my house all the time. Lab had a much better nose for sniffing them out but the golden liked having the antler more once found. Neither one of them ever found a shed when out shed hunting away from the house. They would get too distracted by all the other things. I couldn't even get them to find one after I had found it and worked them all around it. So with all that said, I'd give myself less than a 4 on your scale and probably be 1 based on my first two attempts.

If you started over today with a new dog, what would you do differently?

Train them in other places than just my house. Maybe do more with them in parks etc so they weren't so spun up when they got to go to the woods
