Splices and your life

So how many and when do you feel you can trust one?
If you don't feel comfortable in your splicing abilities, then never.

Test it at ground level. Then test again. Then test some more.

Splices are very trustworthy if you follow the accepted manufacturer specifications.

Make a splice then do your damnest to break it. Find a weight that's equal to yours and drop it three to five feet. Or get a winch and one if those tonage scales. I just settled for weight plus that of a 430lb man bouncing on the rope.

After doing several and knowing the Process, I dont see how you could break a splice using them like we do. That being said, I will be torture testing a spliced rope here soon and I may even send one to TreeStuff and have them test it just to be sure.

I'm going to hook the piece I did to my truck and see what happens I'll get some home depot spring lock carabiners and make sure they break first.
Are you guys lock stitching?

I've got two giant fork lifts at work and a 5 ton crane. Surely I can put it to the test with one of those

I thought about rigging it to the car lifts at work.think they are rated at 12k

Guys dont fatigue your rope unknowingly and have it fail in a tree when it shouldnt. The splicing works on several principles, I wont begin to explain what I dont know. The force to make it slip has to do a 180 around the carabiner or whatever your hooking it to. Maybe my grip is stronger than most, but I can loop a rope through a carabiner and grip it and apply my weight and it wont slip. The force on the burried part isnt nearly what you think. Maybe Bassboy can chime in here on the mechanics of it, but if you follow the recommended method and buried length, I think you will be fine.

I agree. I won't use something after stressing it to near failure. I also think if the rope is spliced with the recommended lengths of bury there's nothing to worry about, but the kid in me wants to try and destroy it just to see what happens lol.

I also agree, it would just build my confidence if it broke somewhere others than my splice.
