As a long-time bow hunter but someone newly interested in giving Saddle Hunting a try, I'm wondering if there's any reason I could not or, perhaps more importantly, SHOULD NOT use something like a shortened Hunter Safety Systems Lifeline and Prusik Knot for my tether? I have an abundance of those that I currently use with my lock-on style tree stands.

Unlike climbing ropes if you look up the weight limit that HSS life line lists is only 350#'s. Which I do not understand due to the force of a fall. Unless that 350# weight limit takes into consideration in say a 4 ft drop. I can't find any other info on their safety rope, if anyones seen different let me know.

I found a similar specification. But, as you've noted, it appears to be a standard static load rating similar to what tree stands advertise. Seems like if HSS had a legitimate climbing strength rating, they would be proud enough of it to tell us.

I assume the 350# is the working load, which assuming they are using a 10:1 safety margin would make the tensile strength 1,350#. (Notice ASSUME was written twice in that statement)

I have full trust in tethrd. I know its tempting sometimes to use stuff that's laying around that doesn't cost anything. The tether is an EXTREMELY important piece of equipment. I decided to go with one that I know is safe. For less than most combination fishing/hunting licenses you can own a tether from a great company that's been tested for safety, specifically for saddle hunting. You'll have it for years and wont regret it. I'm all for saving money and repurposing gear but when it comes down to safety I do my absolute best to ignore cost/convenience and go with something that I'm 110% confident with. I learned that from some guys here and couldn't be happier with tethrd. Have fun with it!

A big AMEN to all of that! Being broke and alive is way better than being once-rich and dead.

I used those for years. I don't see any reason not to use them since you already have it. Make sure it's serviceable then go for it. Save your money for a rut hunt in Illinois :)

Use it if you got it, I went through the same thing last year when I started saddle hunting.. I used a summit safety line for a while last year and never felt unsafe, I ended up switching to 3/8 sterling htp mid season last year for no reason other then my summit rope was prolly 10 years old or so and the HTP rope is like a buck a foot..
This year I watched a whole lot of YouTube on night shift and decided to splice some Samson predator rope, have been practicing ALOT with the new saddle and the spliced ropes and think I got a winning combo for me...

My up date I logged on to Amazon and asked about the HSS life line. I asked what is the mm size of rope and the kn rating. I got back an e-mail
Due to the difficulty of the question it is unlikely an answer will be posted. But we will leave the question up
For a month. Thank you.
Ill try HSS its self.

Does anybody know where i can buy samson predator? Seems like its pretty hard to come by online.

I just realized how bad my math was in that post.
No worries on the math.;) I contacted Summit regarding their lifeline systems and got a fast response. The tensile strengths on their carabiner, rope, and prusik are 5,000#, 5,000#. and 3,500# respectively.

Excellent, thanks. Of course, you hit the nail on the head regarding "serviceable". That's the key to safety, and I'm feeling pretty confident because I've got a brand new HSS Lifeline system that hasn't been exposed to the elements.

You sound like me. Once I commit to something, I'm borderline obsessive. Just trying to ease into Saddle Hunting without breaking the bank right off the bat. If this sticks, I'm sure I'll be splicing and dicing all sorts of crap.

Amazon had the lifelines on sale last off-season and I bought a 3 pack for around $30. I’ve cannibalized a prussic and carabiner from one of them, but not any rope. So far.
