Tether Question

Hello everyone, newbie here. I am in the process of procuring equipment, some from Amazon, other from REI. I am stuck on which tether material to use, rope, and if so what kind, or webbing? Webbing has a high weight support, and I have seen some using it for their bridge, but I have not seen anyone using it for their tether. Thoughts?

I am going to follow the recommendation of DIY Sportsman, and use a SitDrag with a climbing harness as backup.

My hope is to get some advice from the folks at REI here in DC. I'm just not sure about what rope material to use, static rope, accessory cord?

Thanks for any help.

Most folks seem to be using static line for a tether.

We used to climb a lot in my last career and we wouldn’t use static line on a personal safety system because of the lack of stretch and lack of energy absorption.

That said, a tether when used in this type of system is unlikely to cause an issue since any load on the line should come from a drop of well under 4 feet.

But if the pros at REI sell you some dynamic line use it. It’ll be fine as well.

I’ve never used webbing for a tether to myself. I’ve used it for safeties to clip in to rope systems, to make prussicks etc. My concern would be wondering if it would flap in the wind if it wasn’t under load.

Good luck

Hello ArkMonk and welcome aboard. I am new to this scene as well and going through the same process as you. I like the light weight idea and high break strength of your idea for webbing for the tether but I like the ease and simplicity of using a ropeman 1 or 2 even better. Saddle Hunter introduced me to the Ropeman and I can say I will never go back. In my old years of hunting wore a full body harness when in the stand but never a line man belt when ascending and descending bcuz it was a pia w the Prusik etc. since incorporating the Ropeman 1 won’t leave the ground w/ out a lineman belt. I would question the advice from some staff at REI in some instances. Meaning try and find someone who really knows climbing etc. made my first trip to the closest REI to me yesterday which was an hour and 20 minute drive. It was pouring here and couldn’t hunt the am bcuz of how much it was coming down on my day off so I figured what the heck. The associate I found and asked for help didn’t know what a Ropeman was and couldn’t answer my ? On static vs dynamic. “Didn’t know there was a difference on the 2,” and couldn’t explain to me the advantage of a “dry” rope. I excused myself from him found another associate and asked him if he could help. He looked at me puzzled and then said let me find someone else. after 15 mins waiting finally a different guy came to me answering my questions but he too didn’t know what a Ropeman was. As it was I walked out $324.00 poorer, but bcuz I joined the club got a $20.00 card to use to buy a Ropeman from them online as they didn’t have any in stock even tho the website said they did. So just beware of the “associate”. I am finding I am learning more here on SH than any other outlet. Just my .02

Thanks Dale, I'll keep that in mind. At REI, my primary thing to look for is a backup harness and Ropeman 1s. The REI here in DC is a flagship REI, so they have them in stock. Still researching ropes, trying to learn as much as I can before I go.
