Tether tie off question

So I have a question, I want to use a carabiner on my tether to eliminate feeding my slack through the loop. I did it once and the rope seemed to squeak on the biner was hen I moved. What about clipping the biner to a prussik? That way as you move, the tether rope itself isn’t moving in the biner. I figured I could snug it up on the tree enough that it wouldn’t fall when the weight is off the tether, but just loose enough if I need to reposition it, it will still spin on the tree. Does that make sense? Any input? Something frequently done? Major no-no? I thought about the stress on the biner against the tree, but it would take a mighty small tree, like too small to climb, for it to actually put too much side load on it.. wouldn’t it? I figured it would lay pretty flat on an 8-12” tree..

You could use a screw link and not have to worry about sideloading.

Come to think of it, I do have a triangle shaped screw link that came with one of the generic harnesses you get with stands, I’ll use that. What about the prussik part? Still worth using to try prevent squeak sounds?

That falls under unsafe carabiner loading.

Maybe give DMM or one of the other carabiner manufacturers a call and see what they say. Sideloading is to be avoided but laying against a tree trunk isn't as an acute sideload as being loaded over a buildng corner, rocks, small branch etc.

Yea, for us it’s hard because we are following established rules for different professions and hobbies. I’d be interested in what they’d say.

If they do, the boss/lawyers aren't watching. lol

I figure they’ll tel me it’s unsafe, even if it’s only to cover their own hind end. I’m no genius at all, but if it’s laying nearly completely flat, and not on a hard edge, I don’t see how it could hurt. Would it change the load by having a prussik hooked to the biner and choking the tree vs having the actual tether run through it? Seems the force wouldn’t be changing directions when you move as it would if the tether was run through the biner. I’ve been recommended to use a screw link, what would be the difference between that and a carabiner? The way it’s made? Smaller profile so it would lay flatter even on a small diameter tree?

Id just use a delta link, Thats what theyre designed for.

It technically is unsafe as thats not how they're intended to be used. When in doubt follow the manufacturers directions, They spend alot of money testing their products.

I looked up a delta link, I have a couple of them. Would do exactly what I’m looking for. I don’t mind screwing them things opened and closed, it’s not a speed issue, I just hate feeding the knots and slack and stuff through the loop on the tether. I like smaller loops and feeding that stuff through with gloves on is a pain.

I tried it a few times, but being a minimal weight junky, not to mention one more piece of metal, I went back to feeding it through real ninja quiet like.
