I think the video says it all... walked across, and dang near on, two cottonmouths this morning while checking cameras. They didn't attempt to strike, but luckily I had snake proof chaps on anyways. One of the snakes bolted (I may have stepped on his tail) but the other stuck around long enough for me to get the phone out and film him.

greater risk of injury or death driving to the woods. Still I hate surprises so that would have gotten my attention for sure - I have a friends who pulls his pistol and shoots every one he sees - he's scared sh$%less of them LOL - he also eats every food with a fork - yes burgers and fries too.....

Just goes to show you how “dangerous” they really are. I got folks on my timber crew that insist on wearing chaps. We had to buy them for them. Guess which ones got heat exhaustion? Not drinking enough water is more lethal than an old woods worm.

I have yet to be struck at. I wear the gators primarily as briar and high water pants, but it is nice to know they work for snakes too. They DEFINITELY will make you overheat if you don't pace yourself and drink water. I have done 10 plus miles a day in them, though. If the water is lower, I wear standard Lacrosse snake boots and let the legs air out some.

Heat is a dangerous thing. I can go through 2 liters of water in a morning hunt like it's nothing. If I'm going to be out all day, I have to bring a filter and resupply. No way I can carry enough for the whole day in a pack.

Side note: anybody ever witness a cottonmouth's mating dance? It never gets less sick.

Do you have the dansfroglegs chaps attaches to the lacrosse snake boots? If so, which chaps? I got the 5 star chaps on the lacrosse snake boots. It seems the 5 star would be enough protection. What are your thoughts on this?

They are. I got the Snake Protector chaps on the lacrosse snake proof boots. They are a bit heavy, but MAN are they rugged. The areas I'm in are typically flood ground, so there is debris and sharp sticks EVERYWHERE out there. I can't tell you how many times I punched through pants before I started wearing them. I have gotten a couple pretty gnarly gashes on my legs as well from sticks puncturing through lighter stuff and stabbing me. typically in this area, the floods are winter and spring, then morning glories, Chinese lanterns, and maypop grow over the top of all the possibly sharpened sticks (thank you beavers) so you can't see whats under the vegetation. Today, most of the 3+ miles to and from one of my cameras was in crotch to belly button high vines covering all that flood debris. I should have kayaked in instead of hike it.....

I’ve killed a bunch of snakes but have yet to be struck at by one I wasn’t harassing. I can think of a couple times where I was too close for comfort and had rattlesnakes choose not to strike me. One rather large coiled timber rattler that I stepped within inches of and didn’t even know it until I looked back from about 15’ away and noticed a huge head sticking up out of the leaves. I still wear gaiters or snake boots especially when squirrel hunting where I tend to spend less time looking where I am walking.

I don't care if they won't strike, I don't like em, so sir not one bit!
I didn’t say they won’t bite. It’s something like 7000 victims a year in the USA that prove otherwise. Just don’t think that every snake in the woods are out to get you.

Thanks. I spoke to someone at the company and they would not guarantee anything, but said that the 5 star would/should provide protection. That, and the fact that my VaprTrek snake boots only go up to knee, and I decided on the 5 star. I already have the 5 star with Dans frogger boot. I was reluctant to get the heavier and noisier snake chaps. Where I walk/post/scout has brush/thicket/thorns up to usually my neck to my head. I get uneasy stepping in that when I can't see where I am stepping. :)

I spend a majority of my time in super swampy areas with brambles/thorns that go pretty high. The 5 star are holding strong. Not sure how NJ swamp compares to TX, but it is pretty bad. I also just bought the dans briarproof shirt. That is awesome! I can push through thorny brush without worrying about gouging my arms or chest up. Best $70 I spent on hunting gear in ages.

Thanks!

I'm going to have to look into that shirt. The people at work are starting to ask questions...
