Thinking of changing my base. Thoughts?!

For any years I've used gaffs to get up the tree then used 5-6 screw in cranfords as my base. I've been contemplating going to ameristeps or cranfords rope step. I see many of you going to platform Style base but I just don't like that for myself. To me Saddle
Hunting is about being mobile around the tree. Least that's why I like it anyway.

Can y'all give me Some Insight on the ameristeps and cranfords rope step. Thanks

If you can use screw in steps there's not much reason to change your system. It is smaller and more compact than anything you mentioned. I use ameristeps or another small strap on step I have when I'm going mobile just because it's easier than screwing in 5 steps. The cranfords aren't hard to screw in though. The cranford rope step doesn't make a good platform IMO.

I was just thinking of weight purposes. What worries me with the strap steps is how much I've read about them Being spongy

IMO any weight you lose from your screw ins will be countered by bulk of the strap on steps. I use the boat buckle and my steps aren't spongy. Sometimes I have to set everything a little on my first step down on each step but its very solid.

10/4 squirrel. Probably better just buy another can of plastidip and plan to continue to use the cranfords

They're a great option since you can use them. It is always good to have a set of strap on steps available for a platform for when you need them though! The ameristeps are still the go to step IMO for that.

I guess the worry I'm having now is. I've sold my saddle and purchased a mantis cause the weight. I worry that the pouches won't be able to handle the steps in them so I'll
Half to rethink my many years of routine. Change when it comes to a solid routine for hunting scares the bejesus outta me because when I find what works For me I don't mess with it. I get it down to be repetitive and fluid. Looks like I will have some practice to do.

Definitely practice! I get the routine and we all need to make things our own.
But the sys pouch should handle 5 or 6 cranfords no problem. Folding? I'd only be worried about the screws poking holes in any pouch I used.

No I don't like the folding step. Seem to big of a pain to get started in some trees at times so I use the solid step. Plus they make me feel more safe.

Gotcha. The mesh on the pouch is rugged but the screws will wear on any material after a while. I use this pouch for carrying my screw ins when I pre-set a tree and my strap on steps when I'm going mobile FYI

I'll take a look at it. Going to definitely Half to come up with something. The hawk clips have me thinking about hooking a step bag onto my mantis when I start up
The tree then taking it off after i set my base and start to tie in. Thoughts on that?

Which hawk clips?

Which hawk clips?

I'll Half to see what they are. I remember seeing some clips last year when goofing around in cableas maybe it was thinking they would be good to use as a quick clip. I'll Half to see what kind of room I got on the mantis and such.

Just realized tonight I may need a carabiner other than what I got for the ropeman as I thought the ropemans eliminated the use of a biner but I think I'm Wrong

Yes, you still need a biner with a ropeman. They are just very easy to adjust.

Would I be better off getting the biner from the tethrd boys since they have them at offer of would I be better to Order Elsewhere

I haven't used the biner they're offering. But it is from the same company that built the ropeman so it should work well. The more support tethrd gets, the more products they can put on the market for saddle hunters :D

10/4 rubber ducky

Another good option which I plan to try is to carry three WE steps. They make a solid platform if you can get them to cam correctly and they only weigh a pound a piece

Btw G2 Outdoors has great vid on this. Helped me out
