Tools for splicing smaller amsteel?

As the title suggests.... What tools are necessary to splice 7/64 or 1/8 amsteel? I'm looking to make pull up ropes and an extensions for my usa rope mods if I need them to get into a tree thats big at the base.

Also any tips and tricks are welcomed.

Walmart sells anodized aluminum knitting needles. The purple size used to be the one that worked well for 7/64 and 1/8 as a fid. You can buy a set, cut the last 3 or 4 inches off the point end and then file/sand to smooth the cut. That and some thin copper wire (bare, no coating) is all I've used.

I can't stand doing long buries with the thin amsteel. I'm sure there's a trick I don't know of, but it always gets jammed up and won't easily pull into the inside of the rope.

I always use a loop of small diameter, stiff steel wire.

For the smallest stuff I use a small diameter copper wire fid, or a long needle.

I also use copper wire but really like that @Brocky handle!

I keep a 1oz fishing weight with a clip on it so I can attach it to my rope and get it around those big trees.

I use a small fid with the braided sleeve like in the video, then just pull it through. Works great for full buries esp on small stuff(7/64 or 1/8) but I use it on bigger stuff too because it’s just quicker.

Haven’t tried one of these. Do you just fold the cord over and pull through doubled up? Or tape it to the tool somehow?

I bought a set of these, but they weren't hollow. Kind of a waste of a purchase. Try to clink them around and listen for a hollow sound.

I wonder if you could use heat shrink and some wire to make a needle/probe of sorts. I've got some Dyneema set aside for a rainy day to experiment with.

Same, I keep finding solid ones, I’ve tried a few times. Somehow I wound up with one of the hollow ones(think I might have bought it from Amsteel guy). But I bought a cheap kit of paracord splicing fids that are super heavy with a short little threaded end tapped into them, found one that worked… and once I saw that video I stuffed the braided sleeve in there, super glued it and love it

Mine's not nearly as fancy as @Brocky's but this is my go to splicing tool. A cut off piece of wooden hockey stick (they where actually made from wood once upon a time) serves as the handle.

Steel wire fids with interchangeable pliers handle. Long flat blade screwdrivers are another option
