My uncle gave me a Ben Pearson Colt recurve bow. The bow seems to be in excellent condition but does not have a string. The draw weight is 35 lb, draw length 26 in. What size and what type of string should I put on this bow? Also is there a specific type or weight arrow I should be shooting? My draw length is 29 in. Should I still be able to shoot this bow without too much trouble? Or should I just put it up for my daughter and let her start shooting it. Her draw length should be about 20 in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For starters, that is a great weight bow to start with. The lighter weight promotes good form and gives your body a chance to develop “Trad Muscles”.

If your draw length is 29” you’ll likely be drawing around 37-37.5 lbs. No big issues there.

As far as arrow weight goes, you’re going to want to be shooting no less than 10 grains per pound. I say this because since it’s an older glass bow, and is not built with more modern materials, it wouldn’t handle the stresses of shooting a lighter arrow like today’s modern recurves. That weight bow is probably going to like a 500-600 spine arrow.

That bow also does not have reinforced limb tips so your string material will HAVE to be B55. It’s a great material, it just has a little more stretch to it to help absorb some of the shock of the shot.

As far as the size goes, I need to know the AMO length that is printed on the bow. It should read #35 @ ?? Inches. Your string length should be 3 1/2” to 4” shorter than the listed AMO length. It needs to be 14-16 strands.

I would be happy to make you one for $22 dollars TYD. I’ve been building Flemish strings for years. I just made one for @Jefferson10940.

If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask.

Looks like a 60” bow. So a 56” string is a good starting point. A Flemish string can be twisted a fair amount.

And it looks like they measured that bows weight at 26” instead of the standard 28”. So it may be closer to 40-41 pounds at your draw length.

Yes when I went back and read my post I realized I had mistyped the information. I tried to go back and edit it but I must have been a little too late. I'm glad you noticed that.

That bow might be made to peak at 26in draw. Might start stacking over 26 and it wouldn’t be good for you. You will just have to string it up and slowly draw back. If it gets real tight on the back end before you get to anchor, let down. It’s made for too short of a draw length for you.

I agree!! My guess is that bow was made for youth or female shooters. I'd keep it for my daughter and look for something else for you....
