Use of ROS with a platform

I keep thinking about trying these squirrel steps I see everyone talking about. Right now I use a platform and really like it so don’t want to give it up. But while up in the tree I find myself nervous to venture away from the platform and reach around the tree for a shot or whatever. So was thinking a set of squirrel steps might be cool to add for stepping around the tree.

Does anyone out there use a ROS with a platform for this kind of thing or is this not something one would normally do?

I do. Not all the time but I recommend it especially on larger trees.

All sounds good guys. I looked up an older post on here and the general consensus seems to be 5 steps is the sweet spot as far as number of steps to buy. What do you guys think?

Also, I’ve never tried these kinds of steps before. Are they pretty stable to stand on or do you have to worry about them tilting on you or sliding or anything like that?

I bought three. I had four on a previous ROS and I always had one on the shelf never getting used.

They’re pretty stable. Let the saddle carry the load and use the steps to stabilize you when positioning.

If you’re using them with a platform I don’t think you’ll need more than 4, and 3 should be plenty on most trees. I think the 5 was in reference to using SS as a ROS without a platform.

Gotcha. Makes sense. That’s good because those things add up in $ quick if you buy a few at a time.

I'm playing with this. I was using two WE steps and two Ameristeps threaded on the rope of one step for the past two seasons. It worked well for me. This new setup eliminates a Step in my system. The Bullmans are not perfect, but their design places them level with the Step. I will test it out more as the weather warms a bit but I am pretty much committing to using this in the Fall. Not much different from what I have used in the past so I am not too worried about not working well for me.

I like simple and small. Never saw the need for a platform. I just need something to place my feet on and be able to move around the tree.

Wow cool. Interesting idea. I have WE steps. Never would have thought to do that. I’ll have to keep that in mind if I get a set of steps. Thanks!

I put one on the weak side of my Predator platform strap, had to cut that sewn end of the strap off to get it through the slot on the squirrel step. It’s squishier than the platform ( I imagine they are tighter on a strap by themselves ) but works to give you a foot hold to get around the tree.
