Its 9/7 and there hasn't been rain in 3 weeks and none projected other than a .10 mid next week for the extended forecast. I have my seed ready to go but have been holding off. Couple buddies are losing plots due to drought like conditions. What's the latest date u guys have planted? I dont have access to a planted so I will be broadcasting

What are you planting? Where are you located?

The Farmers have been harvesting the black beans by me (Northern Lower Michigan) and converting to winter wheat. September 15th was the latest they said they feel comfortable planting. Ohio may be a few days extra after that? We haven't had much luck planting after labor day broadcasting brassicas however rye, winter wheat and austrian peas have done well for us planting later in the season. Hard to tell with other factors contributing as well... such as soil content and plot prep.

Seems like most brassicas have a 45-60 day grow cycle so if you planted in the next week or so you might still be ok. Best of luck and I am interested to hear how it works out for you.

Bill Winke weighed in on this a week ago in case you are interested in another opinion:

I dont recall ever getting started past this weekend. We always struggle with rain at my place, storms part and steer right around us every year. Will keep fingers crossed. I'm hunting October 5 thru 13 so hopefully the grains produce, I kinda figured the brassica would be a bust

I bet the grains will work for you...We had some extra oats, rye and wheat that we broad cast last year in a small plot just for the heck of it and it surprised us how green it got in just a couple weeks. This year it looked even better and a doe and two fawns made it their bedding area! We did have a water hole (plastic kiddie pool) we made by it that helped as well. I agree with the rain it has been a struggle this year! It rained almost every day for a month so we couldn't get corn out until the week before the fourth of July in some fields and other fields we had to abandon. now we are in a drought.....

Best of luck hunting this year!

I am leaving tomorrow for Ohio to top seed some plots that i got poor germination on. It is not too late to get them in but I would do asap and then cross your fingers and do a rain dance. Best of luck!

Grains, red clover, brassica, pea mix. Southern Ohio.

You're a little late on the brassica but I'd definitely get the clover in the ground if you have several weeks before a frost. The only sure thing in your mix will be the cereal grains. You can plant Winter Rye (NOT Rye grass) almost anytime. I added 20 pounds of WR to a thin plot in mid November last year. It will grow on warm days in the winter and really take off in the spring.

In NC, we put in a few winter peas yesterday, but due to the drought, we are holding off on planting the majority of those and sugar beets until we get rain in the forecast. We will not be overseeding until mid to late October with rye and oats. Any earlier and the deer will abandon the plots by the end of November.

We're finishing up today. Sprayed, tilled, seeded and waiting for rain. This is the first time I'm been with a group of guys that are on the same page. It's refreshing and fun.

Rain headed back to western NC mid week...finally. It was so dry on our place two weeks ago that I decided not to spray. Just lime, seed and walked away.
