When to drill holes for bolts?

I don’t plan on leaving tree bolts in the holes that I drill. So my question is, when is it best to drill your holes in preparation for the season? I want to do it as far out as possible but not so far out that they begin to close up before or during the season and need to be drilled again.

I think drilled holes are usually good for a year or a season. It may vary on different trees. Ive got some I drilled last summer and they were good all last year. Took the stands down early March and the holes were still good.

I don't know specifically, but since the summer is the growing season you need to drill them closer to the fall. The spot that I use bolts in I am only allowed to access a couple of weeks before the season. I'll prep my trees then and they are good all season. When I return to them at the same time prior to the next season they have filled in and need to be redone.

@DC10 where are you located?

I am in Texas and won’t drill until late summer. As the trees go dormant, they won’t heal the hole over winter. Once growth starts in the spring and summer, your usable time gets shorter and shorter.
The length of time it is useable varies based upon growing season length, species of tree, and what time of year it’s drilled.
