Who leaves climbing sticks in the woods?

I have over ten sets of the Cheap sportsmansguide steps and I leave them all over the place. If it's sketchy I'll pull the bottom two because they are the quickest and quietest to set up. If they do get stolen I go to my fall back plan of closest place to hunt. I'm switching gears into more run and gun style right now. But when I only have a short time to hunt a particular day I'll be going to my preset secondary spots.

The only time I leave my sticks in the tree on public is after an evening hunt when I leave in the dark and plan on returning the next day in the dark. Very slight chance of theft . But normally if I do take sticks .... everything comes out .
I don't like advertising my hunt locations to others as I have worked hard to scout these spots....why make it easy for other hunters to kill the animal you're after...?

Quiet is one part, and we’ve covered the need to stealth strip or something for the sticks. What about the strap on steps?

And again, I’m sure I could go slower, but go back to the repeated posts about time and the lack of it, hence the preset steps/sticks for known stand locations. To clear things up, I’m more looking at doing preset stands on local private properties where I can get in after work for an evening hunt. These are small spots where I’m the only hunter and have been for years. They’re too small for the property owners not to notice trespassers.

Anything on game lands is likely going to be a mobile set up and I’ll have more time. I’m not hunting locally on game lands. Not enough space or separation in 5B. I’m likely heading where the public property is measured in tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of acres, not a few acres here and there. Still want to get quieter with the equipment.

I’m going to get some cheap sticks for the local spots that are my go-to. Looking to get to where I can have three local stands on three different properties for quick hunts and then I still have the LW sticks for any new spot, local or otherwise. I see plenty of doe locally, but have to use a lot of hope that bucks will cruise through. Doesn’t always happen. Planning to kill a doe or two locally and hunt for a buck elsewhere later in the season. I’ve tried to stay out of my local spots for the most part, hoping to keep doe patterns regular thinking the bucks will come and doe routines will remain as normal as possible without any hunting pressure prior to the rut. So I’ve hunted one morning for a couple hours and did more scouting than anything else that opening day.

Can you use screw ins on your private local spots? That is my preferred preset.

More than likely. Easy conversation. I probably have enough strap on steps for four sets of five or six. I could leave a few sets up and still have an extra to go with the LW sticks.

I'm at hunting height in less than 20 minutes regardless of my climbing method (1 stick/aider, multiple sticks, jim stepps, SRT). Most of these the actual climbing part is less than 10 minutes. But I understand the value in being able to simply climb up and strap in.

You mentioned things getting stolen so I think everyone assumed you were talking about your public land jaunts. If you have private land, Yes cheap sticks that stay are just fine. Any method will be fine there as you're not worried about theft apparently. One caveat here - you mention that you want to leave the sets on private land, and also hunt the same spots, and also not change deer patterns. The best way to accomplish those three things is to hang your presets in spring/early summer and stay away until the time is right. When you walk in in October/November and hang a set, you will probably change the deer's patterns as they will walk through and smell where you've been tromping around and avoid it. This is the big advantage of mobile - your odds go down drastically every time you sit a tree.

You're not asking for hunting strategy advice, but I'll toss it out there - If you have small private tracts where does come frequently, and you want to kill a big buck, I would leave those spots completely alone until the rut. You'll have a little goldmine once the bucks start cruising and pressure picks up all around you.

Also, one way to quiet your SRT setup is to remove the pulley from the top biner on the hand ascender. It's not necessary for climbing 15-30 feet. It helps slightly for much longer climbs, but not much on a short one. I also girth hitched my foot loop to my hand ascender, removing that biner from the picture as well. Those two things quieted the equipment up considerably. Going slow again helps here. I find that still using my feet to walk up the tree while ascending helps with the movement. This usually means climbing the high side of the tree.

I have 3 sets of cheap muddy sticks in the woods at my private spots, all rigged with climbing ropes.
my public spots are presets with light rope to get my climbing rope up the tree.
so far so good, nice to be able to tie in at ground level and climb up and hang there. makes it light and easy

Another thing with cheap stick presets. If you are doing a bunch of them remove the bottom stick. For example if I set up ten trees with four sticks each that's 40 sticks. If I set them up removing the bottom stick I now have 30 sticks used and nine more to set up other trees. This is another reason I sometimes pull the bottom two sticks so I can set up more trees.

Up until this year I would have a preset hang on to go along with the sticks so all I needed to do was throw a stick or two on the tree.

Thanks for the tips on the SRT gear. That’s what I’m looking for. Eliminating most metal on metal is the key, not just during use, but set up and removal once in the tree.

This is already what I’m doing with the private. Staying out, other than to refresh mock scrapes. Most of these little spots already see some human interaction by the home owners and they’re close to residential areas, so human scent and sound isn’t unusual. It is abnormal for people to be walking around in most of the areas they travel, so I’m tracking there. I normally have stand locations set by now, but the patterns changed and I’m still nailing that down. I’m also prepared to not see bucks there and slay a doe or two in the late season.

Already the plan. Two three-packs gets me three stands using two sticks each with a LW stock and aider at the bottom that I carry in with me. That’s enough to get me a spot on a couple of properties, still have a mobile spot and a few places I hunt from the ground. Most of my private properties are small enough that they only get a couple of sits in the entire season or they’re overhunted and blown out.

That's the best way to do it.

I just left my stepps, Ernie platform, aider, and even my backpack in the tree tonight! But only because I left in the dark and will return in the dark tomorrow morning and it is on private land

for private sets Id imagine the cheapest way to set a bunch of trees would be the ezkut drill bit and one set of grade 8 bolts. Place and remove the bolts as you climb once youve got the tree drilled.
Never done it myself, but it sounds great

If you remove the bolts how do you find where you drilled the holes the next time. I can't think they would be so easy to see.

You could always put cable locks on nicer equipment you don't want to have stolen.

I have 10 lock ons and use 3-5 sticks per stand. Always take the last two down and lock the stands to the trees. This is spread over 500 acres but have yet to have anything stolen - I guess it keeps honest people honest.

Picked up three sets of the Muddy sticks. Not bad at all for a hair over $50 a set. Helped my brother in law hang a stand with a set he picked up and only took two sticks to get him to the right height for that stand location. Haven’t used mine yet other than at the house to try them out. Went out to set up on Sunday in the rain and both spots had deer crawling all over the area I wanted to get in, so I’ll just have to set up when I go in to hunt.

Ive read of guys putting little sticks in the holes before it gets cold enough to freeze.
Other guys just try to drill each hole at eye level or something. I imagine if you drill em about the same level on your body each time, they wouldn't be too difficult to find

Ive never actually done it though.....got a hand drill and a set of bolts though......need to get the power bit and give it a try next year

I've done that many times - even left cameras up for evening/next morning hunts.
