How are the deer populations looking around your neck of the woods? Buddy who has been hunting WI his whole life said it seems like the deer populations are dropping but DNR continues to up the number of tags issued each year. This is also the same guy who just shot 3 does opening weekend so...

Coming home sunday from way up I saw a truck with 3 doe. I see doe all the time as i visit my dad but it is buck only.

Their job is not to make there be as many deer as possible. Their job is to get as many people involved in outdoor activities as possible, generating revenue to remain solvent, and having as positive of an impact on the environment as possible to do so.

That creates incentives that aren’t always aligned with deer hunters. These results shouldn’t surprise you.

It has been garbage for us. Have not seen a single deer while in the saddle gun deer and I hunt alot. Bow hunting was much better. Much better to stay close to private or marsh field edges where they can easily bed and escape from danger. Doe on the other hand still in the hardwoods eating. Lots of eggcorn still and standing corn in private. Hiking out is key right now. Look for high pressure area and hunt the opposite side where it's a hike to get in. That also has been key for me

My group did not see a lot, but it was that perfect amount of ice in my brother’s marsh where deer were avoiding the property for the most part.

I agree with this, but they also do not want to wipe out the entire deer heard in the process. Seems like there are definitely a lot less deer out there these days though.

They say hunter numbers are down all the time, but it doesn’t seem like the public land is hurting for guys. I hiked back 2.5 miles into a swamp knee deep yesterday and came across 3 new ladder stands. They may need to focus on the farmers not buying tags anymore or something.

Where I was hunting, (near Ladysmith), there were quite a few deer. Not a lot of hunting pressure but the wolves come through quite a bit. A large bear population and tons of coyotes. The neighbor advised that he saw a cougar too. I'd say maybe 20-30 deer per square mile. That is much better than what it used to be. Logging had really helped the deer.

It is nothing compared to the southern part of the state though.

I had deer encounters every sit on public land during early bow season but didn’t see a single deer during 2 gun sits. Gun season has been slow for almost all of my buddies.
