So my soon to be 5 y/o girl wants a new bow for her birthday. She's been slinging arrows with me in the backyard all summer with a little cheap kids bow and shows great potential. She's got an 18.5" draw length right now. My question is what should I get her? Recurve or longbow? I've been scouring tradtalk and looking at bows on 3 rivers but I'm not sure what poundage to get her. Most of the youth bows are set on 24" draw length so she'll be losing at least 12lbs of draw weight.

Any insight?

I bought the 58" version of this bow for my son and it shot great. We handed it down to my niece last year. You can buy limbs for the 48" version from 10# up to 25#. The 54" and 58" versions have limbs up to 30#.

As far as draw length/weight. I don't think you lose the typical 2lbs per inch at those draw lengths and those weights. Obviously, you can't lose 12# with limbs that are only 12# total at 24". I would call Lancaster, you might be able to get a set of limbs and if they don't hit the weight you want exchange them for another set.

three of my kids have a mad dog pup. All are 26 lbs at 26”. They are about 100 bucks and are great bows. They get to pick riser wood and glass color. I cannot say how awesome these little bows are. They are longbows which I would start a kid off on. Longbows are pretty forgiving.

I saw this bow named a couple times on trad talk, might not be the best idea cause I'll end up buying a full size for myself.
They look great and at a great price point.

St. Joe River. They have a trade in program as they grow. I have my daughter's old one sitting in the shed. I'll post a pic.

Absolutely St Joe River bow. I have one of their longbows.

Call Tracy and talk to her. Great people

So I ordered a pup from mad dog, 36" 15lbs @ 20" from his recommendations with a purple heart riser. UPS delivered this purdy little 16lb @ 20" draw. Got some nock points tied in and fletcher up some youth cedar shafts. Hopefully we'll have time tomorrow evening for her to sling some arrows. 123951(1).jpg
