Newbie to the saddle and sticks with yet another easy question-------
Is 1/4 inch amsteel large enough to use to replace cam buckle straps on climbing straps???
Thanks guys

I think 1/4 inch is pretty standard for a rope mod. That's what I have on mine but have been meaning to order some 7/64 for daisy chains. I don't know how heavy you are, but I know you aren't heavy enough to worry about 1/4 inch lol.

Yup plenty. I use 7/64 on my daisy chains.

I was about to ask this exact same question. Would 1/4 inch amsteel daisy chains work?

Sure but they’re bulkier than they need to be. Some have used 1/8”

I use 1/8" amsteel daisy chains for my sticks. I personally wouldn't use amsteel for the rope mod, only because it is too slick. JMHO.

Of course it will, apparently it's just overkill and three times the price of 7/64". I made one out of 1/4" before I read enough to see most were using the 7/64" when doubled the whole length. The one I made out of 1/4" is a single rope between the end eye and where the daisy chaining starts. So you can use less rope with 1/4" but it still ends up being more expensive because of the extra price per foot of rope (hope all that makes sense)

Post 37 here shows my 1/4" daisy chain rope. https://saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/amsteel-questions.15142/page-2

Do you guys think 7/64 amsteel continues loop would be ok for knaider/swaiders on climbing sticks found some people use for hammocks already made for sale?

I have searched everywhere to try and figure out why everyone is using 1/4 amsteel for the rope mods and not 3/16. For the 1/4 its 8600 lbs and 3/16 being 5400 lbs. The strength seems way overkill for either one compared to 8mm accessory cord and 3/16 is almost half the price at Dutchware compared to 1/4. I'm not sure if it has to do with 3/16 not having enough surface to tree contact but I can't imagine another 1/16" would make that much of a difference.

The biggest complaint I can remember in my short time around here has been the thin diameter cutting into your foot and it being hard to keep the loop open to get your foot in there. Seems the breaking strength is good enough

Only one way to find out and that's to try it. Most people are followers and just do what has already been proven to work for somebody else. Lots of guys don't like using amsteel for a rope mod PERIOD, seems majority would rather do a daisy chain. Got to make those decisions for yourself. Personally, I'm in the middle of testing both of those methods for myself.

Daisy chain is made from AmSteel.

Yes sorry. I get loose with my terms. When I mention rope mod above, in my head that means using the wrap method, not a daisy chain rope mod. My bad that was unclear

Yes. That’s correct. AmSteel is not preferred by many for the rope mod or for anything using knots because it’s slippery. It’s great for splicing though.

I respectfully disagree. I've heard that a lot about amsteel being too slippery. In the video below I actually test it on a steel pole, doubt you will find anything slicker than that in the woods? Around the 3 min mark, I even undo the half hitches and wraps and show amsteel holding my weight with just the pass behind.

Dave your video is the specific reason I have no doubt the amsteel will grab and hold if used correctly, i just can't figure out why it seems everyone went with 1/4" and not 3/16". Do you think using a smaller diameter than 1/4 would be less user friendly (i.e. being to lightweight when handling)?

I like 1/4 inch because of its diameter it is easier to handle. i think it will hold better due to the increased surface area but i have not tested that out. To me, 1/4 inch just works well and is what I use on all my mods thus far. I have a new aider/climbing method I made out of it that I am testing out I may share at some point.

Yeah love that video, it definitely inspired me to make my first amsteel rope mod for the wrap method and I can't say anything bad about it yet other than a little more difficult to undo.

I’m running 1/4in so far it’s been solid but I could see a smaller diameter work great for lower profile.
