Torching Amsteel doesn't work very well.To control the ends you can
A. splice an eye at the tag end before you splice the connection side. This is my preferred method. Or you can follow this method for splicing a fixed end. splicing fixed end
B. Wrap the end with masking tape, then cut and torch end. Video
For the tag end, just do an end bury. Then poke a hole thru the Amsteel so it penetrates both the bury and the outer sheath and feed the shock cord thru it and form the cord loop for securing it when wrapping up the rope. The end of the amsteel wont frey in the bury and having the shock cord run thru it insures it cannot ever slip out. An end bury takes about 3" of extra Amsteel to form.
