Another tree stand fall.

I fell off the bottom step of a 3' stepladder and interiorly dislocated my left shoulder (down and in not up and out like normal). Spent 5 hours in the ER while 3 Dr's tried to reduce it before they called the Orthopedic Surgeon for advice. He showed up watched was they were attempting and said "Not that way you Morons". Got 2 more years out of the Army learning how to reuse my arm.

I never wore a safety harness until I started dating the Love of my Life. Right before hunting season started, a care package showed up in my truck including a brand new harness, that she insisted I wear. First hunt wearing it, my top rapid rail kicked out at 18-20' and fell to the ground. Slammed into the tree, but I was able to get back to my hang-on, call a friend to come out and reattach the rail so I could get down. Never got in a tree without being attached again. Still have that harness on the wall in my hunting room to remind me.

Another one came across.

“"If one thing I can preach is safety. I always open them boxes up and put my tree stand up and throw them harnesses away. I didn't think they was any good," Kaleb said.”

Well well well. If it isn’t the consequences of my actions.

Another one came across.

Guess I missed that one. An hour away from me.

Not to be rude, but it's drumright. Ain't many smart folks come out of that dying oil boom town anyway.

This guy on Tiktok says his prussic knot came untied, causing him to fall. He later says it was a HSS tether.

Hum. I looked at these on line. Pretty sure you wouldn't catch me hanging from those knots they have on there. I bet over time they pushed down and came apart. I don't think they where intended to be continually loaded like he was using it. Maybe @Brocky can offer some knot in sight.

It’s poignant when there are more treestand fall fatalities than shootings. I was again just reading the statistics for my state. Last year (2022) was the safest on record tied with 2021. Only 9 Hunting Related Shooting Incidents, with one being a fatality, which was self inflicted by a turkey hunter. However, there were 13 Elevated Hunting Incidents, 4 of which were fatalities!! Just 2 of the 13 were wearing a safety harness!!

I’ve repeatedly put hundreds of pounds of force over probably a hundred hours on those HSS prusiks before I got the tether and LB I use now. There is ZERO way I can believe that prusik “came untied for unknown reasons”. Is it the safest option out there? Probably not. But you would have to intentionally alter the knot in some way to cause that problem. I honestly felt perfectly secure hanging from one of those, especially as a LB. I feel bad for this guy but I can not in my right mind or conscious heart believe that was the rope’s fault.

Could be that he had untied it at some point and didn't re-tie it correctly.

Does it come with a stopper knot? The photo on line doesn't show either way.

Yes. The F8OB is very tightly dressed and the tail end is shackled to the working line, then the tag end was knotted and shackled as well. The prusik is also knotted and shackled and very neatly dressed. They also mention only about 10K times in the instructions mine came with (dvd AND paper) that you should always check your prusik for dressing and 3 wraps on each side.
Again, you’d have to be doing what @BTaylor calls a whacky “Soul Train audition” to get undone from the HSS tether. I have two that have been holding me up for over 5 years. I don’t use them for life support anymore but that’s just because I upgraded all my ropes. I still use them to hold gear and hang dead deer without any problems.

It looks good in the picture, the metal strip pressed on would add security, but maybe fell off, or was removed for sound reduction. I’ve found the overhand tightens when used this way, not like being pulled apart when using as a bend to join two ropes together.
Guessing there was a lack of gear checking, which should happen very frequently.
